Does anyone think a "Pass items to the next camper" sticky would be a good idea?

Hi everyone! I've been planning our upcoming trip (arriving in just 45 days!) :dogdance: and one thing keeps going through my mind- just curious if any others think it would be a good idea....

We are thinking of buying a large crockpot while we are down there, but really don't want to bring it back on the plane to MN with us... Also just toying with the idea of once we get there- going on Craig's list, and seeing if we couldn't find the kids some decent, but cheap, bikes to use at the fort. Again- what would we do with them when we left?

Off and on I see posts from people with food they haven't used, or water- stuff like that... It all just makes me wonder if it would be a good idea to have a sticky posted here where people could list stuff like that, and those who are arriving at the same time could maybe make arrangements to get this stuff- just a camping version of "paying it forward" I guess. :flower: I'm not sure if this is a crazy idea, but wanted to throw it out there and see what everyone else thought. Or if it's really not a very good idea...The people it would help the most are probably those(like us) that are flying in and don't have our own RV, but maybe it would also help others- I just don't know! What does everyone think?

Last year Snowmedic was leaving the day after I arrived. He passed on his Folger's coffee, so yes it can be helpful.

Serenitygr, I see you are arriving 9/29, shame, because we own 4 (yes, 4) crockpots. One always stays in the camper. If we were overlapping more I would be more than happy to bring one of the other two with me and gladly let you borrow it. We don't come in until 10/9, but if you would like I can easily do it, but please, and I really mean PLEASE, if you buy one do not offer it to my wife. She has this crazy thing about crockpots. We have one small, two normal sized, and one that has two separate cooking tubs.

As far as bikes go, we will be golfcarting it this year, hopefully for the last time. My youngest is 4, and while she is learning to ride bikes, she is slow and easily intimidated. The windy sidewalk paths at the Fort I am afraid will be too much for her this year so we elected to get the cart to make it easier.

I can see where passing food and drinks along can be fairly easy, especially since there will be several of us there at the same time.

Tiggerdad- that is pretty funny about the crockpots. Unfortunately we'll be using it our first week there, because that's when our extended family is also going to be there- we've talked them into 9 days at the Fort for their very first Disneyworld experience- I don't know which one of us is more excited! And we just thought it would be pretty nice to throw some chicken and bar-b-que sauce in there one morning , and some taco meat another day- stuff like that so it cuts down on cooking. We'll have 9 kids between the 2 of us- ages 4-14- so we'll be pretty busy just keeping an eye on them LOL

I will have to talk to you guys there! Don't worry- I'll hide the crockpot LOL

We're also doing the golf carts, but the year we drove down having the bikes was the absolute funnest thing for me and the kids- I just loved it. And looking on Craig's list there are bikes all over down there. We'll have a rental car (hopefully a minivan) so it would be just a matter of logistics picking up some of them. :)

I hope others chime in on this thread... I just think it would be an awesome sticky to have available- even if it wasn't used all the time at least it would be there!

Can't wait to meet up with you!

I will be at the Fort Sept. 16th - 25th. We normally fly down at least once per year and often leave alot of stuff behind when we leave. I usually try to leave it with the Fort Wilderness staff but sometimes we just put it at the end of our site driveway with a big FREE sign on it. It's usually all gone with-in an hour or so.

I love your idea for a "Fort Freecycle"! Sign me up. Sally

I love the "Fort Freecycle" too.

If you can't "Freecycle" with someone planning on being there (and needing or at least holding for someone who needs it until they arrive) perhaps an "Extension" of the "FREE" sign at the end of the driveway would be to add a note that while it's "Free" that the recipient should consider using while at the fort and then "Free Cycling" it again to another Fort member. Perhaps with an "Added" Plug for the Disboards to see if there is anyone else with a need for it when they are currently done with it.

Either case, I think if it was something that I no longer needed, that I would rather allow someone else to use it rather than just dispose of it, whether they kept it or passed it forward.

How would we get something added on here as a sticky? I'm not sure who to ask :)

That would be great! We had an almost full bag of charcoal that was crazy expensive, and tried to pass it on to all our neighbors without much success. Would have loved for someone to have gotten some use out of it. We did leave it on the table just in case someone came by and wanted it.

I think what might be a good thing along this lines too, if the Fort had a place for people to drop off/Pick up such items. That way, for example, a bag of charcoal doesn't have to be left out in the elements hoping someone can get use of it. (I am sure the Staff would remove it when "Cleaning time" came anyway).

I could leave my squirrel feeder...wait...no, it only holds about 2 pounds of feed. Not big enough, sorry.

I see threads for meets for some months, maybe each month should have a thread and that's where this information can be pulled together. Or maybe quarterly threads so it doesn't get cluttered. A very nice lady at a state park once gave me a couple of boxes of Frosted Flakes and would you believe that was the hugest, bestest, greatest hit according to my kids! I still remember thinking what a nice gesture of a stranger to do for us:)

Since for some reason recently all these old dust covered threads have been showing up and I thought back to this thread.

Recently @SouthAlabama5er was offering up some FPs left over from his trip and it reminded me of this great thread and what a good idea it was. I got some hot dog cooking sticks, marshmallows, sugar cubes, snacks, butter, and a bunch of other stuff from @serenitygr and I passed on the sugar cubes, butter, bacon, and marshmallows to a group who came in beside us because I didn't have any other Disers around when I pulled out.

Just bringing it back up because you guys are overlapping so much in your visits. Don't know why I didn't do this sooner.

Maybe it will help some of you.

And I really like this idea of passing it on to others (DISer's or not). It does more than just help someone out. It promotes positive attitudes, it helps save our earth but not throwing things away that could still be used. Plus it also helps that you are not "Transporting" the extra weight (Okay, I know bacon doesn't weigh that much :) ) and wasting the gas mileage. It also just makes sense.

I will certainly attempt to do this if I can on my trips.

First of all, there should be no extra bacon, ever. But always nice to let someone else have what you can't use instead of throwing stuff out.

Ironically, that was my first thought too.
