When I was little we would string popcorn and cranberries. This is my first year in a house that I own and we have a real tree. I am thinking of stringing some while I watch Christmas movies on tv.

My parents have cranberry bogs so we have all the free cranberries we want so could easily do the cranberries and popcorn, but tried it once and it was sooo hard on the fingers we swore never again.

I remember doing that when I was little. Haven't done it in a long time though.

OH, I wanted to do this this year. We did ONE of our Trees in the "candy theme" Alas, no one else was interested in stringing :sad2:

BUT I found so many amazing ornaments the last two years (saved em up) ...lots of cookies and glass spun candy and some that look JUST like a clump of popcorn with cranberries in it....I also hot-glued the wire hangers onto REAL candy (movie size) that you get at the dollar store (milk duds in yellow and Peppermint pattys in silver and M & Ms in brown and Mike and Ikes in red and Candy necklaces and So much more) the tree is filled to the brim with CANDY and I just LOVE it......

I am a little crazy with trees....each one in each room has a theme....THIS may be my all time favorite....Since we celebrate Xmas Eve here, I am so looking forward to all the kids taking all that candy home that night.....I think they'll be thrilled (not so sure about mom and dad though :lmao:) BUT they all know I am the crazy/fun aunt :cheer2:

Have you posted pictures?

I tried it once and yeah, it's not as fun as it looks. Takes FOREVER and fingers ger very sore. No one wants to help because thay already know it's no fun. Eh... I'll stick with the fake stuff.

My parents have always done it. The use air-popped popcorn and no cranberries. Then, they store it from year-to-year in tight-locking Rubbermaid containers. I know, I know. It sounds impossible, but it does stay okay over a years time. Me, I'd be afraid of mice getting into it.

We used to do this every year when I was a kid. I think my mom would make the popcorn a few days ahead of time---maybe slightly stale works better than fresh.

I work in a school and I saw an idea that would probably look tacky on a tree, but looks great from a distance, so would work for an outdoor tree or a fence. The teacher had taken foam packing peanuts and strung them up high in her room. Cheap and eco friendly, and popcorn like. I think she had maybe shredded the ends, because it reminded me a little bit of snow or icicles.

We used to do this in school and while it was more entertaining than math, I thought it was kinda dull.:confused3

We used to do that while we watched Christmas movies when I was a kid. It's a good memory for me :).

We did it one year when my DD was little. She liked it :thumbsup2

This year was the first year my 10 year old daughter and I did this and we had fun!! We did Cranberries and popcorn and she liked it alot...her string is al ittle smaller than mine, but she didn't think it was boring or no fun. She loved it and wanted to do it again!! :)

No, we never did the high-fluting cranberries/popcorn.;)

However I do remember many many yrs. of making those paper chains to put on the tree.

I love how it looks so we tried it several years back. I really liked it, however one day we got home from work and found most of the popcorn had been eaten by the dog... Thus, we don't do it anymore!

I've always wanted to string popcorn but I worry about ants. I'm in Hawaii and already have ants, centipeeds, millipeeds and small roaches in my house on a regular basis. I really don't want more LOL. We do paper chains though!

We used to do this when I was a kid. We would have a Christmas decorating party each year and invite our friends over. We would have snacks, hot chocolate, and make decorations for the tree. We would also make those paper chains out of construction paper.

I remember trying it as a child and getting the sore fingers and the broken bits of popcorn so I wasn't sure about trying it again; but dd has been sick, can't get out, and we wanted to do something "Christmassy" at home. So this is what we decided on.

So, I popped the corn yesterday morning. It was a brand new bag of corn (bought to make caramel corn gifts) and I air popped it. We used upholstery thread and big needles. It worked out great and we had a ball! So, we have some popped for tonight too and will string some for Mom's tree while we watch "its a wonderful life" and after making some Christmas candy.

Our dog LOVES popcorn so we would probably run into this too.

I don't remember ever doing this. I have strings of wooden beads that look like cranberries that we put on our tree each year.

Does anyone remember those wooden ornaments that you painted (paint by number type deal?) We used to do these all the time--mine always looked really bad though. My kids would love these.

We tried one year and most of the popcorn broke. We later found out that you need the popcorn to be stale. We never tried it again, so I am not sure stale popcorn does work.

Thanks everyone for sharing your memories. I will pop the corn tonight and string it Monday or Tuesday. Once we take down the tree I will put it on the tree outside for the animals.
