I admit i sit in an office all day and don't do much exercise.

so if i do decide to go to WDW - is it advisable if i start a walking programme a couple of months before i go?

anyone else do this?

We walk 3 miles a day at leat 4 times a week and it seems to help. When at Disney on average I think we walk close to 10 miles a day.Factor in some rest breaks and time for your meals and viewing live shows where you can sit and rest awhile. We do fine but at end of week we are getting tired and sometimes go back to resort for nap and quiet time, then go back to parks early evening. :goodvibes :wizard: :wave2:

Hi there,

We don't do any fitness preparation although we always try and set a 'Fit for Florida' weight loss campaign. Although we inevitably don't quite hit it. Both DH and I are office bound.

If you can introduce a bit of walking into your schedule then that will be of benefit, but I don't think you will be too disadvantaged if you don't.

For us - we know that visiting Disney is a 'full on' holiday. It's a long way to go and costs more than the average short-haul holiday. So we like to make the most of it, rather than get home and think - oh I wish we'd have done this and that.

The one thing we have always ensured is that we have really comfy shoes. :cool1: The lightweight, open walking sandals are great (not the leather ones, I think some are made from neoprene) - especially after water rides, cos your feet dry really quickly (also good for the water parks). Otherwise it's good socks with old trainers.

We're thinking of taking a pedometer this time - just to see how far we do walk in a day!

I usually walk every day for exercise. I enjoy it and it's good for me. The past few months, I got out of the routine for one reason or another but my upcoming trip prompted me to get going again. I do 2 miles/day with some of it being hilly terrain. That really helps to strengthen leg muscles and build stamina. I've never carried a pedometer to Disney before but I am this time. I'm just curious to find out how much walking I actually do there.

dh and i try to keep up with walking and exersize, i do a tape called the firm that has arobics with weight training, i know i am more consistant with it a few months before our trip, i want to fit into a bathing suit and not look too gross he he, but it really helps with stamina and i don't feel so guilty about all the good food we eat when were down there! :cool1:

Yes! I walk a lot anyway, but about a month prior I try to get on the treadmill for a minimum of 30 minutes/2-3 miles every day in addition to my normal routine to prepare. My real objective is to find and deal with any "hot spots" in my shoes before going to Disney. I also always carry moleskin for blisters in the parks.

My DH and I wore pedometers on our December trip last year, and we averaged 12 miles a day. One day we walked 16 miles!

We went to WDW in early May, and my wife and I started a walking program in late-November, to prepare. By January this turned into a running program, and by the time of WDW in May we were running about 2.5 miles three times a week. I'm sure it helped us a whole lot.

If you really don't walk much....then I suggest you start you're walking program...however, think really hard about how much you really do walk....grocery shopping, malls, dog walks????? It may add up to quite a bit you do to begin with, but you will be walking quite a bit at WDW, that you may want to "practice" a few times before you go. PS....Make sure you bring comfortable shoes to walk in...not the first time you're wearing them, blisters can be quite painful! Have a great time!

I try to do 10,000 steps a day (I wear a pedometer) and I work in an office, but I make it a point to go talk to people instead of calling them and using stairs instead of the elevator. We were in Nashville a couple of weeks ago and stayed at the Gaylord Opryland and walked quite a bit (approx 19,000 steps per day, over 8 miles on average) and it really didnt' bother me. Yes, you walk a lot at WDW, but it's broken up by rides, meals, shows etc. Just wear comfy shoes and go at YOUR pace. I'm taking my pedometer this trip purely out of curiosity. I have never gotten blisters wearing socks and walking or running shoes. Blisters form when your shoes don't fit properly and rub somewhere on your foot. You shouldn't get them if you have socks on and the right size shoes.

Our trips are tradtionally in the winter when we tend to want to hide out at home because the weather is so bad. However we know that we need to be in shape for WDW so we call it WDW training.

We either do mall or gym walking before hand. Just making sure we get enough walking in so our legs are too sore at the end of the day at WDW.

Besides it is good for us! I need encouragment in the winter, WDW is that.

I try to walk the treadmill about a month prior as to avoid crampy legs and tired feet.
