DS14 has never seen snow, so I told him I would look into a vacation where he could do that. I used to live in Buffalo, NY and personally I don't care if I ever see snow again. I don't want to go back there because I'd be afaid we'd get stuck and wouldn't be able to get back. LOL I would like to do this without having to pay for airfare. I figured if anyplace in GA would have snow it would be a ski resort, but I'm having a hard time finding info on them.

I'm not sure there are any ski areas in Georgia. But the North Carolina mountains (and ski areas) are not too far away.

There is one tiny hill in north Georgia called Sky Valley, I believe. It has one lift and about 300 yards of downhill. It might open for a few days at a time IF it snows and/or it's cold enough to make snow. It is near the North Carolina border- not worth a trip even from Atlanta. There are a couple of ski areas in North Carolina. Beech and Sugar, as I recall. Those places can usually make snow and stay open for a couple of months in the winter. These areas have several lifts but they can be very crowded.

Realistically, if you want to ski, you need to get on a plane and go back to the northeast or fly out west.

No ski resorts in Georgia - we don't have the hills for it. You defnitely need a plane ticket if you want to ski and you live in Georgia. You may be able to build a snowman in Georgia, but the skiing isn't so great. :)

None of us actually ski. I was just thinking that even if it wasn't snowing at the time of our vacation there might be at least fake snow on a ski slope. In my mind I'm picturing a winter resort that has sledding/tubing or something for people who don't ski. LOL It's probably wishful thinking that we'd be able to drive somewhere like that.

i don't know of anywhere in georgia, but i live in NE alabama, and there's a place about 1 hour north, in mentone, alabama, it is actually a ski resort, lol. the snow is fake, but i hear it's still very pretty. i'm not sure what their schedule is, but i doubt it would be hard to find. it's probably the only ski resort in alabama, lol.

If you want even decent snow you'll have to go to North Carolina. Cataloochee, Sugar Mountain, and Beech Mountain are decent. Nothing like Colorado, but you can get enough shushing to have a little fun.

Depending on when you are vacationing you may still be out of luck. I live in Ontario and there are some winters when they can not make snow until well into January - it has to be cold enought at night to make snow.

If you want definate skiing then you may have to head to an area that is guarenteed to have hills open.

Yeah, what they all said. ;) Sugar/ Beech in NC for real snow, or Mentone AL for fake snow that is still ski-able.

BUT ALSO... Stone Mountain in Atlanta puts on "Snow Mountain" in the winter, with a downhill tubing attraction (on fake snow), but no skiing. Some friends went last Dec and said it was great! Their 10 and 8 yo boys had a blast. :goodvibes.
