Does anyone remember that in WDW they were building a monorail stop?

I Remember I think it was in the late 90's or the early 2000's that they were building a monorail stop in downtown disneyany ideas why they stoped and if there any ideas for the future for new monorail stops anywhere in WDW?

I don't recall there ever being anything more than wishful thinking about monorail expansion. Certainly no actual construction.

During the construction of Epcot there was talk of running the monorail through Epcot and on to DTD, but that was 1982. The pilings were driven under WSC to suport the pylons and track but no further construction occurred.

I think if there ever was a plan this is the reason it was dropped:

$1,000,000 per mile is the estimate cost to build the monorail system back in the 1970's cost.

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Just think how much that would cost us!!???!!!

well I remember I was in DTD and I saw something that looked like a monorail station being built I belive this was during the resession and that maybe be another reason the idea was droped maybe if our ecconomy ever is recovered we might see that in the future

I never heard about a monorail stop at DTD rumor but a monorail spur was in the original plans for WDW.

Before the MK was even built plans were in place for 4 hotels to be on the monorail line. The Grand Floridian hotel is on the land that was set aside and dedicated to be the "Future" Asian Resort Hotel (A). The "Future"
Venetian (B) Resort was going to located between the Poly (5) and the Contemporary (8). A fifth hotel was going to build on a monorail spur which ended at the "Future" Persian Resort (C). That resort would be located just to east of the Mk and North of the Contemorary and would built with much of the hotel being on /over the water of Bay Lake. So even though the GF was not built until 18 years later a hotel was planned for that area at the same time the monorail was planned.

I've seen these map a lot and its such a shame that the didn't build those hotels cause with disney today those will never be built cause they only build value hotels these days

There is actually an easement on the SSR property for a monorail line. However, the documentation actually states that it is extremely unlikely it will ever be built...its more of a caution that if it IS built, SSR owners can't complain...

Its a shame they wouldn't extend the monorail line to all the resorts cause personally I don't like the bus and the monorail is faster and doesn't have to wait in traffic and it is more environmental as well

whereabouts in DTD do you remember this construction? To the best of my recollection there never has been the construction started in that area that wasn't completed. Besides the station construction wouldn't be the first thing started, it could be done very quickly after the actual monorail track installation was well underway. I'm not sure what you saw being constructed but I'm sure it wasn't a monorail station.

This is the reason they used during the Backstage Magic tour as the reason why the monorail will not be expanded. It is just too expensive.

During our trip last October, during 3 times the monorail had some sort of stop whil we were in the middle of the track, each time it took 20+ minutes to get going again, and a couple of times while we were waiting in the station, there was some defect and no train was coming through.
I wouldn't exactly call it a transportation system you can rely on.

They aren't building value resorts today - or any other hotels. There's a huge chunk of POP that's never even been finished because it provided more value rooms than are needed. They're building DVC resorts.

Since Pop was built (and never finished), we've gotten Saratoga Springs DVC, Animal Kingdom Lodge DVC and the "unannounced but everyone knows what it is" DVC going up next to the Contemporary. (There are also new DVC resorts being built at Disneyland and in Hawaii.)

I'll let you guess where the bigger bucks are being made. Hint: it's not from building more regular hotels or monorail miles.

If it could be built for that price it would be done in a heartbeat. A more realistic price is probably between 50 and 100 million dollars per mile. The newest monorail system built in the United States was in Las Vegas and that cost $650 million for 4.4 miles! Of course they have a few more right of way issues than Disney would.

Just getting new trains for the existing tracks (like the ones at Disneyland) would be a major improvement for WDW.

I think it would be more profitable for disney to build a stop at DTD because I always stay at the Conemporary and I rarely go to DTD because of the hassle of taking to the bus to the other side of the property

The monorail track does cost a lot of money. But DHS isn't that far away from EPCOT. It would be cool if Disney extended it's monorail line to DHS.

1) Monorails to all the resorts would be a horrible mistake.
2) Additional to big bucks, it would be a logistical catastrophe.
3) There would have to be a Grand Central Station for changing trains.
4) Can you imagine up to 15,000-20,000 people hitting it at one time?
5) Buses are
. . . less expensive to buy
. . . easily adjusted up/down for changes in ridership
. . . can go directly from resort "A" to park "B"

NOTE: Environmental concerns are easily corrected. Converting diesel to biodiesel (can be done instantly without any changes to the buses) would reduce emissions by 78%. Converting diesel buses to natural gas would reduce emissions by 96%.
