Does anyone remember Space Mountain in 1978?

Okay, DM swears that when she took us to MK in 1978 that the seats on Space Mountain were different. Instead of there being individual seats like there are now, she clearly remembers that you had to sit between people's legs. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Thanks!

yes, the seats in the car were bench style. you sat with the bench between your legs, and you leaned up against the person behind you. A lap belt went around you to hold you in, on the bunny hops it was the only thing between you and the ground

I actually think this is true, Granted- I wasn't alive in 1978..

I remember my mom saying something about this, and I know its still that way on the Matterhorn in DL.

I completley remember it being that way when I was a kid.

Aside note...Space Mountain was the moment that my mom discovered she was pregnant...with me! I was pre-natal on the mountain.

Yep. I remember going on it about this time and having my sisters hair blowing in my face.

yes, I was 11 yrs old and it was one benchseat - my dad got in and put his legs up, then I sat between them, and last my mom got in and sat between my legs.

can confirm this, my moms one and only time riding it she nearly squished my sister to death with her legs!.

I can confirm. This was the first time I had ridden Space Mountain and I remember sitting between my friend's legs.

Can you believe that I've been to Disney several times during my childhood and have NEVER gone on space mountain??? The lines were always soooo long, so I never made it on. It was the one ride that I always wanted to go on each time we visited. We are going next week with two young children, so I doubt I will make it this time

I can confirm it well past 1978 (I was 7 in '78 and rode it that way)....into the 80's I remember riding with my younger sister in between my legs...DH & I dont remember how it was in 93 on our honeymoon!

Yes, I remember that. And I finally figured out how to solve the problem of crushing my husband. When they ask how many in my party, say one, this way we'd each get our own seat. Only trouble was, that was the year they had the new seats.

Yes the seat was as everyone stated. In addition, they had grooves up and down the flooring and you would decide which groove you would slide your heels into to keep yourself from sliding forward in the seat.

I remember it well. DH and I were newly married and it was the coolest coaster we'ld ever ridden.

Yep, I remember this very well! Nearly squeezed my cousin to death, LOL!

Yeah I rememeber those seats. They were like toboggan seats.
Princess tops were in style then (somewhat like they are now too). I think I had to darn near sign a disclaimer that I was not pregnant. I also had to remove my (perscription) glasses. So all I really remember is a lot of dark and going fast.
My how times have changed.

Oh yes, my younger brother and I nearly gave each other concussions as I buried my head in his back to keep my glasses from flying off. I intended to take them off and put them in my pocket at the last moment, but got too involved trying to arrange both of us in the car. Our heads were banging in to one another through most of the ride.

I remember another time, I think the next year, riding alone and trying to slouch down really low to minimize the ups and downs.

I probably won't ride in January, since youngest ds isn't up for that kind of ride. DH and oldest ds go as many times as they can.

I knew I could get the answer here once I thought to post! We took DM on our trip last year and as we stood in line she described how she clearly remembered the rather uncomfortable seating arrangement from our trip 28 years ago...once we got on and the seats were not the way she described, i I thought sure Mom....... but s;he was so certain and she brought it up during out trip again this year so it dawned on me that it was possible that things had changed in a refurb during all this time and I KNEW how to find out! So, I have called DM to admit that she was right! (As usual! ) Thanks for all of the replies!

DH and my first trip to WDW (actually it was only the MK then) was sometime in the mid 70's. I remember the seats in Space Mtn. being as described.

Does anybody know what year they were changed to the present type?

I can confirm they had these tobogan seat at least through 1985.
