Does anyone remember a creepy tv show called Today's Special?

lol! I saw the title of your thread and thought --- hmmm... that sounds so familiar!

Sure enough, I used to watch it. I think it started when I was just a wee bit too old to watch that kind of show (maybe 8 or 9??) but it was heavily advertised and I was really curious about it. My sis was littler, and she really liked it, so we watched it together. (note: I just looked it up, and it seems as though it actually started in 1981, when I would have been 5, but I don't think it was on American TV till like 1985 or so).

You are right that it was creepy as heck. Like ... if I recall the plot was about a big department store where all the customers would leave for the night, and then the mannequins and these freaky-looking characters would come to life (??).

I think what made the show distinctly creepy was that it was out not too long after the movie Mannequin came out. Now Mannequin ... was about this guy who had an unnatural ... um ... relationship ... with a mannequin. The mannequin conveniently turned into a hot woman whenever he wanted to spend the night with her, but frequently he'd wake up in the morning in the department store with everyone staring at him doing kinky things to a hunk of plastic. My theory as a kid was that the movie was REALLY about this guy who had sex with a real mannequin (and it was only in his fantasies that she was a "real woman).

Hmm... anyway ... I guess I kind of conflated that movie with today's special and now can't separate the show from the "creepy" feeling I get from the movie.

My son and I watched it in Toronto when he was a toddler, circa 1988. I don't recall it being creepy.

My brothers and I used to love that show! The girl's name was Jody, the mannequin-guy was Jeff and the mouse was Muffy. Wow, it's been years since I've thought of that program

"Today's Special, shout it loud and clear... Today's Special!" yeah, I immediately thought of that part of the theme song when I read the title of this thread. I definitely remember that show!!! And I love love loved Pinwheel!!! I wish that it was on DVD or that there was an old school Nickelodeon channel that played those shows that used to be on. I was just saying to DH the other day that Mr. Wizard was the best and he should still be on!

Didn't Nick have the best old shows??? I would love for them to have a retro channel. I would even pay for it. I loved YCDTOTV, Pinwheel, Mr. Wizard, Double Dare, etc.

There's a house near me that looks just like Pinwheel House. To this day, when we pass the house my very grown up kids yell "Pinwheel House!".
