Does anyone quill, and is it hard? I have seen it done a few times, and in several books and on pics here at the DIS, but just wondering if it is hard to learn. Do you use scraps of paper you have? Are there a lot of special tools?? anything you can tell me would be helpful. I am trying to find a class about it at a LSS. thanks in advance.

I just got the stuff needed to quill. I buy the strips already cut. I am famous for not cutting straight. I have not tried it yet. I also bought an inexpensive tool to use with it. It holds the paper when you start curling it around. You can do it without the tool, but it is harder. DIY scrapbooking had a show on it awhile back. :)

I do it & you can buy a bunch of tools or not. I got DD a slotted quilling tool for Christmas - it was like $3 or $4 at Mike's. I prefer this type to the "needle" type. If you buy a 2-pack, it will have both types in it. I've never been able to get my quilling really round doing it by hand - it's all in the start. :confused3

I buy the pre-cut strips. It's pretty difficult to cut 1/8" strips evenly. My Mike's only has tubes with ~4 colors & they're pretty expensive & short. At ACMoore I've been able to buy nice, long single-color strips in packages of 50 or 100 for less than what I paid at Mike's.

I haven't bothered with the size tool. It's a small board with holes in graduated sizes. It's used to make sure that your coils are the same size when you need 6 of the same size.

I also haven't bought a book yet. (I'm too cheap.) You can Google quilling for ideas. Don't forget to use the "images" section.

Here's the link I have bookmarked for the DIY Scrapbooking show on Quilling:

Thanks alot, I have been shopping, and I have checked out the above links. I think I am ready to experiement. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again.

Good for you! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. :)

I have 3 tips for you. First - once you become comfortable with the process, be careful how fast you wind the paper around the tool. I've gotten some nasty paper cuts doing that. Second - When you want to remove the coil from the tool, allow it to loosen a bit first...especially if you're making a tight coil. Otherwise the leader piece can get stuck in the tool & you'll end up with a spiral. BTDT ;) Third - an acid free glue stick doesn't work to well to seal the end of the coil. For some reason it just doesn't seem to stick - at least it didn't for me.

Have fun! :teeth:

I don't know anything about how to quill, but I just wanted to post about the cute dolphins I saw on one of the scrap sites yesterday (don't remember which one). Anyway, I just wasn't aware that they could be made into a larger image like that. Really cute for a Sea World page, or especially Discovery Cove!

Thank you !!! Your info helped me GR8ly. I was able to make a small circle--- I know not much but hey, I was impressed, showed DH and he just looked at me like I was crazy or something...... Thanks again, will keep at it.

My DH doesn't "get it" either. He thinks I'm nuts! He told me it was too much work & I should just print clip art instead. :sad2: Men! LOL :rotfl:

If you get a chance to look around in JoAnns, see if yours has the little packages of quilled red hats in the scrapping section. There's a coordinating package of purses & hats, but the set of all hats is sooooo cute! DD & I are thinking of trying them one day soon.

I'd love to do a picture & frame it, but I'm not sure I have the patience to do that many pieces. I like things I can do in just one sitting. ;)

how do you keep them from getting smushed on your scrapbook pages? Seems like they would get all bent and crushed in your books.

They're actually very sturdy! I've read that some people have tested them by standing on them & they hold up to it. Now understand that I haven't tried it because....well, let's just say that I'm pretty sure you could smash them with a steam roller & don't care to try it. ;)

I often use quilled pieces on facing pages, so I just make sure that they offset each other. The same goes for any other bumpy or lumpy objects like eyelets, buttons, etc.
