white westhighland terrier? I am thinking of buying one soon...I have checked online and to have them shipped (flown) it is extra 250.00..I have found one on I think it is findpuppies.com (i think) and it is a male (4 weeks) for 550.00 with shipping...Can anyone tell me about these cute little dogs?

I highly recommend them! We have two Westies. Suzy is 4.5 and "practically perfect in every way". She has a perfect temperment and terrific personality. We love her so much that we said that if we could get another from the same breeder, we would, and 3 weeks ago came home with another puppy. Heidi will be 13 weeks old tomorrow.

They are wonderful pets. They are very cute, very smart, and highly trainable. Suzy gets along well with our two cats (well, one cat ignores her but the other cuddles up with her and they sleep together in the sun). Heidi is giving us a run for our money but I think that is because we had forgotten how much work a puppy is. We hope that she will grow up to be as nice a young lady as her "sister".

Here are some pictures:

My friend has a Westie. She's a good dog but very very yappy.

Please research your puppy and don't buy from an internet company, site unseen, places like that scream puppy mill to me.

do you have any ideas on how I should go about getting one?I have looked here in town and there are none to be found...any help would be great!

We have a westie mix and she is a great dog. She is a rescue and does have her little quirks. Also try petfinder.org and do a search for west highland terrier. We got Ruby from a rescue organization in Ocala. PM me if you want more information.

I wanted to name the new puppy "Ruby" but I got outvoted, and she became Heidi instead.

Go through the AKC site to find a reputable breeder. They will want to interview you on the phone to make sure you are a good fit for this breed.

I have Cairns, which is the same dog but not white.

Fabulous dogs, but they do take a special kind of patience. Negative training is a not an option for these terriers, you have to be willing to "convince" them to obey with lots of positive reinforcement. They also require quite a bit of exercise and interaction. You do not want a bored terrier in your home! The males take an extra bit of housebreaking - crates are a big help.

There is also a rescue org. in my area. The fact that these exist should tell you - do your research and make sure it's a good dog for your situation.

Finally, if you do have the puppy shipped, be ready to spend a few days of intense attention on it - shipping is very hard on a pup!

Good luck - I hope you end up thrilled with your Westie - these little guys have great big hearts and are awesome dogs.

She was birthday gift from DH and DD. Since my birthday is in July, the name seemed to fit. I had a border collie mix as a kid and her name was Heidi. Here is a picture or Ruby.

We had one in our obedience class. He was very smart and quite the winning personality.

Named Timmy. 13 ears old and still as lively as a puppy! He's a real soppy really and loves nothing more than a chewy shoe :goodvibes

That's funny, I thought I was sold on getting a westie, but I'm now leaning toward a Wheaton. If you get one, you'll have to let me know which one you like best.

That's funny that you had a Heidi too! When I named Suzy, I chose it because I imagined an energetic little girl with bouncy pigtails. My daughter chose "Heidi" because she said that name makes her think of the same thing.

Your Ruby is adorable! Suzy always gets a new bandana whenever we get her groomed, but inevitably she ends up getting it wet and then the dye runs.

We don't but the people across the canal from us do, and they happen to have puppies for sale that are about 4 weeks old. I can't help but wonder if.....Is the world that small? Anyways, I just wanted to mention that someone I work with just bought a puppy that she had sent to her, and she recommended Continental Airlines, if possible, for shipping. She said that they're the only one (maybe Delta also, but they don't fly here) that has a pressurized, temperature controlled area for transporting animals. I don't know from first-hand experience if that's true, but that's what she said. And I'd be very interested to know about the puppies across the way. They are awfully cute, but boy do they bark!

Yours are adorable too. I don't think she is a pure Westie. She has a rough coat and not tail. I honestly can not tell if her tale has been docked. She is a rescue that was found wandering the side of the road with her buddy. Unfortunately, someone adopted her pal before we adopted her. Or we would have bought them both home. The terrier personality is definitely a different personality!

Thanks!oh our wheaton is a very good dog.....she minds so well and is very very sweet with kids, you could not MAKE her bite someone! lol

That website is a puppy mill - see www.prisonersofgreed.org for more info on what that entails. Are they actually selling a 4 week old puppy? That's illegal, and unethical. That dog should be with his mother still. They should be reported to the authorities.

You don't need to fly in a dog unless it's a rare breed from a fantastic breeder (and even then, you fly to the dog and bring it home). Go to the AKC website, start looking at breeders near you. Do some serious research on what a good breeder is and isn't. Look for red flags.

Buying from a irresponsible breeder not only contributes to teh abuse and neglect of animals but it also means your dogs parents have not been tested for preventable diseases and ailments that will cause your animal pain and suffering (not to mention tons of $), your dog's parents have not been tested for temperment (meaning you could have some serious issues on hand), your dog was not cared for properly as a puppy, and your breeder will have little to no contact with you when you take your puppy. A good breeder will want to help you adjust to having a new puppy and help with feeding and training. They will also be raising your new puppy in a home with a family so they are already interacting with people and they care deeply for their health and temperment. They only breed dogs that are worthy of being bred.

PM me if you need some help finding a reputable one and I'd be happy to do some searching for you.

Great breed choice, btw!

I don't know where in Florida you are, I am in Northwest Florida (Milton) and my neighbor has a westie if you would like I will ask her where she got hers PM me. I know she got him from a local breeder and he is a cutie!

I know there is a westie breeder in Chipley and a Cairn(what I have and LOVE) & Australian terrier breeder in Ebro. I do not too much about them though.

My friend got hers at the SPCA :thumbsup2 She's a cute dog.. her name is Gigi. Have you looked there?
