Does anyone own a Roomba - do you like it?

My husband has finally accepted the DIS-boards as part of our lives.

I asked him for a roomba for Christmas - he doesn't believe they work all that well and said - "Before I go out and get you one of those - why don't you ask around and see if they are worth it -- Post it on that Disney board you like so well and see what your friends say" (he called you my friends - isn't that sweet)

So anyone have one? How do they work? And do they do hard floor as well as carpet? -- TIA

I was shopping in Bed Bath and Beyond the other day and looking at them. The clerk mentioned that they get quite a few returns on them as people are dissapointed in how they don't pick up much and the unit has to go over and over the same spot before it gets all picked up.
They are pricey too. I bought a Wind Tunnel at Sears and so far so good.
I have bought all my vaccuums over the years at Sears. They price match anyones lower price and if I ever have a problem, they replace it if they can't fix it.

We own five cats and a pug that sheds like crazy. We have a very low pile, almost berber carpet in our condo. I use the Roomba a couple of times a week just to touch up so that I don't have to bring the big vac out as often. I still use our awesome Dyson Animal at least once a week, but in between I will set up the roomba and let it run to just keep things clean.

It doesn't do a heavy duty job, but it does keep things tidy between big cleanings. I would think if you don't have animals you might even be able to get away with it being your only vac.

My parents have a roomba. We named him robbie, and he is a hardworking member of the family. Dad sets him in a room and lets him go. He really likes to put hiim on while he is gone. Mom and Dad have tile floors. I know after robbie is finished the floors look great, but I can't comment on how he well he cleans on the first go around.

we have two cats and I was thinking it would just be nice to have to set up and have going while I go to work -- just so I don't have to haul the big one out every other day --- I was just hoping it would just help keep the new carpet looking nice.

Are cats scared of it? Mine are scared of the regular vac too -

Oh and thanks everyone for your input -- I think I am leaning towards having him get me one :goodvibes

Bought mine through Hammacher Schlemmer for the Guarantee. Have medium pile so it gets hung up some times. Works well on Golden Retriever fur but then i do have to defur wheels. Also it does not get into corners. So i use roomba frequently and regular vacuum less often.
Yes, i am happy with it and would buy again. Think it will work even better on wood or laminate floors.
now they have iscuba, a floor washer!

I LOVE MY ROOMBA! I got the Roomba red last year for Christmas, and he is quite the little robot! My house is about 1900 sq ft and we don't have pets. My last house had low-pile berber and lots of pergo, and this one has mostly thick carpet. It has worked great on both. I think he does and excellent job vacuuming....I have not used my upright since I got Roomba! The trick is to set it down and let it go for at least 30 minutes per room. It eventually gets to everything, but you can't expect a quick sweep. Check out the reviews on amazon for some more praise. Now, my original Roomba began doing the dance of death in May. This was a common problem, I believe has since been fixed. They sent me a brand new machine and my warranty started over in June. Just this week, I had some dust bin problems and they are sending me a new dust bin. It has been great dealing with the company and they stand behind their product. It is a robot, with a brain, so there are some bugs. I use the heck out of it too, almost every day. I'm getting one for my mom for Christmas this year, and I gave mil one for her b-day. :flower:

You just gave ma a great idea for what to get my mother for Christmas. She has a dog and a few cats and its get so bad with the tile floor!! I think she will love it!!

technically it is not really a vacuum. It is more of a sweeper. It does not suck up the dirt it brushes up the dirt. The dirt chambers are small and need frequent emptying.
I like mine as a novelty and as an inbetween vacumming kind of thing. I don't think it would replace a vacuum

Try doing a search--someone just posted in the last day or 2, which I answered. If I didn't have a migraine I would find the link or copy and paste that thread, but I need to put my achy head to bed.

UGH, my DH wants to show me how to use our new TIVO. Maybe I'll just pretend to watch him and sleep on the couch. ;)

Yup there have been a good number of threads recently about the Roomba. It's excellent. It has completely replaced our regular vacuum for everything except stairs and area rugs. It does a far better job than I would with the regular vacuum -- it fits under the waterbed -- I don't! :)

The best thing about it is that in just a couple of minutes, we can get it started in a room, any day of the week. Therefore, each room gets cleaned more often, and dirt never builds up. That's especially critical this time of year, as they start salting and sanding the roads. That stuff wreaks havoc on wood floors! Roomba is just one more layer of protection against that.
