Does anyone not bring a camera when they to disney?

I usually scrapbook my trips so while I do use my iPhone, I take a small point and shoot camera as well. I don't take my bigger camera though, because I can't be bothered to haul it around the parks. I find the small point and shoot camera takes fine pictures and if there are any special ones I missed, I order from Photopass.

OP, I think you are in the minority here, and miss the point of why most people take pictures, which is not narcissism. If you never look at your photos and don't value them, then you may be better off without taking any and nobody will judge you poorly for not taking a camera. I would say your post reflects more on your own selfishness or other ego issue, than camera people's "narcissism" for taking pictures.

But the photopass alternative you mentioned costs at least $15 per photo to download or ~$70 to order a CD of all of them, they are not free, but are a good option for a few specific locations you can get them at. So even with photopass, there are other needs for a camera.

I always have a camera of some sorts. I love photos of any type! We have made photo books out of our trips and the kids love looking back at them. Most recently we finished our basement so I have a "Disney wall" I'm working on where I took 20x30 frames and I'm making collages for each of our trips. We also have one spot for each of the kids where they stand every year and we take a picture to compare :) It started by accident but we've kept it up and it's fun.

I don't take photos of myself, but I couldn't live without a camera! Taking photos -- even on an amateur level -- brings me immense joy. It's cathartic for me, and it really helps me to feel more creative and look for all of the wonderful details everywhere I go (not just Disneyland). I take thousands of photos on Disney trips, and can easily crank out 500-700 photos in a one-day trip somewhere else. I love taking photos and would never stop doing it!

ETA: I was always "the one with the camera" when I was a young teenager, and all of my friends were annoyed with me for taking photos of them. Now... they are all glad I did, as we have some great memories captured forever in photos.

ETA: Thank goodness so many people take photos, or I wouldn't be able to do my Theme Week Countdowns in my Christmas/Holiday Superthread every year!

I do have small children, but I loved taking pictures at DL just because.

We do look at them often. How else would my now 4 yr old remember he actually met Mater and Lightning 2 yrs ago? We don't go often enough for the kids to remember everything without capturing those moments

I do think if I went solo as an adult, I'd still take pics. I do enjoy the moment while I'm there, but there are so many small details in everything at disney that should be remembered and even documented to look back on IMO.

There's no place else like Disneyland. If people want to take pictures to remember their time there, why should it matter to anyone else?

Who even owns a camera anymore since smartphones can handle about 90% of the pictures that most people ordinarily take? I haven't taken a camera to Disney in probably 15 years.

Have you tried to print any of those? They're not even remotely close in quality to what a DLSR can do.

And while most smart phones can handle a photo in broad daylight, they fall short in low light situations.

I don't carry my 6D because I enjoy the workout.

@sunshine1
One my first visit to Disney in California I took lots of photos, as it was all new. I am one of the few people who don't take selfies and I don't take photos on my phone. I bring my camera with me to Disney but now over a 2 day visit I may only take 20 photos, mainly of things like my food in restaurants or menus or if I see something odd or interesting. I don't do character meets and most of the time I am solo in Disney.

Not everyone is obsessed with taking a million photos of everything. When I'm in Disney I am there to experience the magic, taking photos is not high on my list.

Over the years I have had many extremely special , magical experiences not related to Disney and for most of them there are no photos or video. To me this just makes the experiences even more special as only the people who experienced them with me share the memories.

I think the important thing to remember here is that there is no right or wrong answer. As long as whatever you are doing is not against the rules, or specifically bothering someone else, or somehow impacting someone else's fun, then whatever someone wants to do in the parks is their choice and their business. Many people -- as a lot of us have stated in this thread -- love taking photos and couldn't do without them. That doesn't mean that we are enjoying our time at DLR any less than anyone else, or that we are not experiencing the magic, or not having a fantastic time because we are looking through a lens. It just means we are enjoying the parks differently than those who choose not to take a lot of photos, and we want to have photos for specific reasons (memories, crafts, projects, etc.).

As the saying goes, vive la différence!

I have and I disagree on the quality, but I also don't print 99.99% of them. Everyone I know has access to receive them digitally.

I've also used my iPhone underwater and it takes better pictures than my last underwater digital cam.

Most photos look great on a screen. I thought my daughter's iPhone photos looked quite good on the screen. Then she had me print some. Big difference, even at only 4x6.

Not that it matters though. If they work for what you want, then it's all good. I just have seen what a full frame DSLR can do and there's no going back for me.

I dont look at my pictures from one year to the next, if that.

If that is your personality, then there's never a need for a camera for you.

I take far more scenery pictures than I do of anything else. Photopass photogs won't take those!

We also really enjoy offering to take pictures OF people, when we see them struggling with "selfies". The only difference between a "selfie" and a "picture of us at Disneyland" is that another person takes the latter. :)

Exactly. Just because I post that I don't bring in a proper camera and just use my phone for quick pics, doesn't mean that I would expect everyone else to or even be bothered that someone else does something different. Just don't whack me with a selfie stick and we're all cool.

No worries about that happening with me! I am the one person who probably couldn't figure out how to use a selfie stick if I had one! :lmao: I can't even manage a regular selfie (without a stick). I stick to taking photos of details and the general landscape and avoid photos of myself.

Last year at the Academy Awards, when Ellen DeGeneres rounded up a bunch of celebrities to pose for a group photo, Bradley Cooper was the one who actually took the selfie -- and successfully managed to get mostly everyone in the frame behind him. If I had been the one trying to take that same selfie (or would it be a "groupie," as there were a lot of people in the picture?), I probably would have ended up with a photo of the limo drivers outside the building.

I am in both camps. I normally take a camera to the park. I know I can snap some with the phone but even the best camera phones are slow relative to a medium quality digital camera. I have a wrist strap for my big digital Canon and a much smaller pocket dig that takes very fast shots (shutter lag, time between button press and click) so you can take quick, clear shots. I normally end up taking several hundred during our trip.

That being said, I just ordered the PhotoPass+ for this trip so the two of us (just DW and I are going) can both be in the shot and not worry about getting someone to take a good photo up us with some level of quality.

This is a PhotoPass shot from 2010 that was simple, show up, scan the card, smile, go on a ride

I literally laughed out loud at that, Sherry.
