does anyone know any Katrina victims who need children's clothes?

I have a lot and would be happy to send some to people who need them!

If other people have them - I would be happy to try to match size needs

Your offer to organize here on the DIS is wonderful!!!!!! Where are you located? If it's reasonable to assume people from LA, MS, etc would have evacuated to your area--you may want to try contacting a local hotel to see if they are putting up any families. I have several bags of clothes (and some toys) of DGS that were headed to St Vincent De Paul but read yesterday about evacuees in a hotel in GA (20 to a room!!!!!!!!!! OMG), I am thinking I'll probably just stop by the hotel and drop off. I might contact the hotels in my area first to see if any made it this far up. The majority of organizations collecting for the relief want money only--no kind kind contributions. But these people drove here literally with what could fit in the car and nothing else.

I would think that there would be a place set up near the Houston Astrodome for clothing donations. When the people arrive off the busses, many of them will just have the clothing on their backs, and will need something else to put on.

I've been going through closets here too, even before the hurricane. And now I want to give it to those who left with just the clothes are their backs! Toys too! I buy way too much stuff for my kids and they wouldn't miss half of it!

I also have a lot of boys' clothing. I realize these people don't have homes and closets but I'd love to be able to provide a family with young boys fresh, clean clothes.

I have boxes and boxes of boys clothing that has barely been worn that I would love to donate too......perhaps once the dust is settled I will look into donating these to victims of Katrina.

Where could I send clothes? I have some summer clothes, but mostly long sleeved shirts, can they be used? I really don't know anything about the the temps there :confused3 I am sure they are not needed right now, but in a few months would they be?

I had the same idea, and thought that with some of the hurricane victims being relocated to Reunion Arena in Dallas I would be able to put these clothes to good use. Unfortunately I've heard several times on the news that they do not want people bringing clothing to donate. If someone finds an organization willing to take clothing, I have a large bag full and ready to go.

I have girls clothing I would love to donate as well. I hope to hear of a place we can mail packages soon. We all know they can use it. It would make me feel as though I was helping. I made a donation to Red Cross but that just doesnt seem to be enough.

I too have a ton of boys clothing that I was planning to ebay but would love to donate. I would think there would be a huge need at the Astrodome.

I had the same idea last night thinking I could go down to Reunion Arena and drop off some clothes, games/books for the kids, etc. - I'm really surprised they don't want donated clothing - I would think that is what these people need - new clothing.

I heard on tv today that relief agencies do not want clothing, etc yet because there is no way to transport the items to the people. They are still requesting money at this point.

But keep them...at some point they'll need it!

you should see some of the stuff that people donate (NOT that anyone on the Dis would donate junk). I personally have sorted clothes that had become wet, NOT clean and not in good shape.

It is a logistical nightmare to have a place to sort it, store it and then get the people to it.

I think taking it to a local hotel/church that is housing people might work best.

I'm NOT trying to be a Debbie Downer at all!

I think it is great that you are willing to donate things. Maybe your local house of worship has a sister church that is housing folks and you could send it there?

I copied this link from another post.

Below is a link to one of Houston's television stations that lists the numerous organizations that are accepting donations, what they are accepting, and how to donate.
