Does anyone LIVE at Disney as a fulltime guest?

We're just waiting for retirement.. our plan is.. move to Florida..work at WDW.. I'll be the happy old man sitting in front of the stage of playhouse Disney.. just smiling and singin' along.....

I did our online checkin last week. This was in the disclaimers and in the follow-up email that was sent:

So what they're saying is, really, "This is the happiest place on earth, so long as YOU don't live here!"

So let's revisit the original question. Assume a guest has to move around every three weeks (or more on the campgrounds) and maintains a house off property to call home. They might even stay at that other house for 2 weeks a year to ensure it really is home - are there people that spend nearly all their time on property?

I've heard of this on cruiseships - but not disney. And of course cruiseships move around, but typically on the same 'track' over and over.

ive got to get that kingdom keepers book!

i think this is a very interesting topic as ive thought about it so many times before! i think that when i retire, i will move to orlando and become a CM too ... manybe i will be lucky and get to do it sooner than that!
i do think the magic would be a bit lost living there but then again another poster had a point saying that you are always around people during their happiest moments (aka vacations)
the longest ive ever stayed is 2 weeks and by the end, i was glad to come home and see my dog and my family

Oh, in my joking about Kingdom Keepers, I almost forgot: If you want to live in Disney, you could always move to Celebration! We lived there for a while when I taught in Kissimmee, and the proximity to Disney was a HUGE plus.

I would assume you could get a long term rate at the Swan or Dolphin.
Most Starwood properties have a monthly rate that you could contact them directly about.

It is possible that it is not an option with the Swan and Dolphin, but if any Disney hotel would have it it would be them IMO. I would guess it would be half what you would pay at the GF.

Disney de-annexed that to the County. Celebration isn't on Disney property anymore. It might be surrounded by it, but it isn't on it.

Here's my guess, tell me if I'm wrong. I'm basing my guess on how campuses often do this: There is a handful of nice clustered houses, near the property edge. The residents are probably attorney types that are required to make Reedy Creek exist - ones that are paid well enough that any inconveniece of being in those houses is overcome with money. I suspect the houses are not completely owned - maybe leased or maybe Disney is part owner or maybe the house is owned but the land isn't - so that the property can't fall outside the Disney control. The residents are served by neighboring infrastructure (mail/police/etc) by agreement and probably through some payment means.

Several months ago there was a similar thread and someone (dare I say Robo?) came up with a google map of the residential homes on property. They weren't much more than trailers though so I doubt that they had the big wigs staying there.

To address the original issue, if we count Swan and Dolphin as 'Disney Resort Hotels', and I certainly do having stayed at them a combined 6 weeks, then there's nothing other that a thin wallet to prevent one from living in the world for good.

Based upon the descriptions given in my PP it looks like here is the "community" north of bay lake.

They look nicer and have a community pool. Maybe the ones off of Bay lake can use the CR pool.

You can see the two areas above. Also the link posted earlier to the wikepedia listing for Reedy Creek explains that there are tohes who own undeveloped 5 acre tracts of land and do not live on property (probably Disney execs) who form the board for Reedy Creek, and there are those who live in the two areas above (probably well taken care of Disney employees) who don't own the properties but form the residet "voting" population. Disney covered all the bases when creating the development district. I think there are two areas according to the wiki posting because there are two counties involved, hence the need for "voters" in both counties.

I've done 4 weeks in them as well, and had this in mind in my original question. In big cities, it isn't unusal for people to live in hotels.

However, I suspect now, given all the discussion around Reedy Creek, that there is more than your thin wallet allowing you to live there. I'll look and see if the Swan / Dolphin has any language or limitations.

More and more, I'm thinking these residents are NOT execs. Think of the board spats and such - a board member could REALLY mess with Disney through manipulation of whatever voting rights they had in Reedy Creek.

Instead, I bet they are simply well cared for employees that have such a sweetheart deal (free housing?) compared to what they could get outside the world, that they dare not rock the boat.

And they probably have an NDA (non disclosure agreement) and are reminded of it often.

What a great thread! This is all so interesting.

On the DVC boards it has been discussed in the past about us members "living" at Disney. I know there is a limit to the amount of points one member can own as was mentioned. I am not sure what the rules are for us members about how long you can stay in one room. But let's say it is 3 weeks. In Jan. you can stay for 3 weeks in a studio at OKW for 231 points. A one bedroom would be 477 points. If I have 6000 points(I wish!) that can get me a lot of weeks at Disney! Even if I have to change rooms every 3 weeks, who cares! I can see keeping a residence in your home state and spending the winters in WDW. That would be a great way to spend my retirement!

This is a good point. Some past board members would have loved to mess with the majority/management this way.

Soon you will be able to live on WDW property if you want (it was de-annexed as well but is right next to Fort Wilderness.) So even closer than Celebration.
