Does anyone know this relatively obscure song?

I was up until 3:00 am last night trying to find the Title/Artist of this song with no luck. It's driving me crazy and I'm hoping someone can help me! I remember hearing it fairly often on the radio back in the early-to-mid 90's (1993 - 1995). The artist was an individual, not a band and I remember very little about the lyrics other than the words 'lock (unlock?), door, key'. The genre is rock or maybe alternative.

I know that's not much info but several years ago I was trying to think of this song and I actually had someone find it for me with that little info. I'm going to have DH go back to that same person and maybe he can help me again but surely someone here on the DIS knows because this kind of thing can really drive me crazy until I figure it out.

The only thing I can think of is Julia Fordham's "Lock and Key"

The chorus is "I'm gonna wrap you up and take you home with me
Treasured in my heart, under lock and key"

It's an alternative song and is on her Porcelain album.

Any more info-male singer, kind of beat, fast tempo?

It's a male singer but I can't quite grasp anything else about the song - I'd say it's on the tip of my toungue but that doesn't really apply to a song, does it? For some reason when I think of it, I'm reminded of REM, if that helps at all. I do remember there was sort of an offbeat (as in different) sound to it, which is why I liked it.

I googled and it came up with an REM song. Maybe it was called "Laughing."

Laocoon and her two sons
Pressured storm, tried to move
No other more, emotion bound
Martyred, misconstrued

(chorus)
Lighted in a room, lanky room
Lighted, lighted, laughing in tune
Lighted, lighted, laughing

Laocoon and her two sons
Run the gamut, sated view
Know them more, emotion bound
Martyred, misconstrued

(repeat chorus)

In a room, lock the door, latch the room
Lighted, lighted, laughing

Laocoon and her two sons
Ran the gamut, settled new,
Find a place fit to laugh,
Lock the doors, latch the room
Lighted in a room, lanky room
Lighted, lighted, laughing in tune
Lighted, lighted, laughing in tune
Lighted, lighted, laughing in tunes
Lighted, lighted, laughing

Hey! I bet it's "Heart Shaped Box" by Nirvana

She eyes me like a pisces when I am weak
I've been locked inside your Heart Shaped box for weeks
I've been drawn into your magnet tar pit trap
I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black

Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
hey
wait
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice

...your advice

Meat-eating orchids forgive no one just yet
Cut myself on Angel Hair and baby's breath
Broken *edited* of your highness I'm left black
Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back

Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
...Your advice

No, none of those. I'm thinking the singer's name could be something like Robert (not Palmer or Plant), Richard (not Marx), Brian (not Adams)....not one of the more recognizable names although I'm sure if I heard it I'd know immediately. I can actually remember standing in my bedroom and looking at the sheet of paper with the lyrics DH's friend had given me and looking at the guy's name on it....it's right there on the brink of my memory......but I can't grasp it and it is so frustrating!!!

Artist/Band: Keen Robert Earl
Lyrics for Song: Leavin Tennessee
Lyrics for Album: West Textures
The sun is settin’
On our time living here
You’ve lost the will
I’ve lost the heart
We should be leavin’
While the coast is still clear
Cause we won’t make it after dawn
We can cash in our chips
And pack up the car
Lock up the door
And hide the key

The only two things that mean anything to me
Are loving you
And leaving Tennessee

Silver eagles fly down streets paved with gold
Stars keep shining through the dawn
Anything you can dream of to hold
You can have here for a song
But there’s a song tonight
That’s riding the wind
I'm the words
And you’re the melody

The only two things that mean anything to me
Are loving you
And leaving Tennessee

It’s just the two of us
All out on our own
That’s the way it ought to be

The only two things that mean anything to me
Are loving you
And leaving tennessee

We can call up all our friends on the phone
Tell them that someday we’ll return
First, we have to start to make a new home
We have one last bridge to burn
Lay your head down and we’ll drive
Through the night
And in the morning light you’re gonna see

The only things that mean anything to me
Are loving you
And leaving Tennessee

The only things that mean anything to me
Are loving you
And leaving Tennessee

No, that's not it. Thanks to everyone for your efforts! Any other ideas?

"If You Love Somebody Set Them Free"

If you need somebody, call my name
If you want someone, you can do the same
If you want to keep something precious
You got to lock it up and throw away the key
If you want to hold onto your possession
Don't even think about me

If you love somebody, set them free

If it's a mirror you want, just look into my eyes
Or a whipping boy, someone to despise
Or a prisoner in the dark
Tied up in chains you just can't see
Or a beast in a gilded cage
That's all some people ever want to be

If you love somebody, set them free

You can't control an independent heart
Can't tear the one you love apart
Forever conditioned to believe that we can't live
We can't live here and be happy with less
So many riches, so many souls
Everything we see we want to possess

If you need somebody, call my name
If you want someone, you can do the same
If you want to keep something precious
You got to lock it up and throw away the key
If you want to hold onto your possession
Don't even think about me

If you love somebody, set them free

Okay, Okay, I've got it now. Perhaps it's a song from MY favorite obscure artist of the 90's - Freedy Johnston

This one's called Perfect World. It was in the movie "Kingpin" with Woody Harrelson. He also had another great song in that movie, called "Bad Reputation".

Perfect World

You oughta see your face
You oughta hear your voice
Last time I was here
I wouldn't turn around

You oughta lock that door
Somebody might get in
Didn't I teach you that

This perfect world
So blue I can't begin to say
This perfect world
I know I never should have gone away
But I still deserve to say goodbye
No matter what I've done

I see her in your face
Hear her in your voice
Last time I was here
They found her in the lake
You oughta see my scar
You think I'm made of stone
Didn't you tell me that

This perfect world
So blue I can't begin to say
This perfect world
They say that soon I will be gone away
But I still deserve to say goodbye
No matter what I've done

Now I've gone around it's far too late
And these pills won't even let me cry
No one knows you even when you're gone
But I still deserve to say goodbye
No matter what I've done
No matter what I've done

You oughta see your face
You oughta hear your voice
Lock this after me

OP, you came here today expressly to give me a headache, didn't you? ;)

I'm going to have to subscribe to this thread now.

Nope, no hits yet. I've emailed Dh's friend who found it for me last time and I'm hoping he'll come through again. In the meantime, I've been wracking my brain to come up with this song. And I've searched through all my drawers and closet hoping I stashed that sheet of paper with the lyrics somewhere. I'm like a woman possessed - too bad I can't put this much energy into something constructive like housework.

How about that Pete Townsend song, "Let my love open the door?" Well, it's not alternative or sound much like REM, but it certainly talks about a door! Actually it came out in 1980, so probably not! Oh well, good luck on your search!! :)

Terrence Trent Darby's--Sign your name across my heart?

Just a guess.
