This was mentioned several times in the "most important tip" thread, but no one gave an answer.

Is it anti-perspirant or deoderant?
Any brand work better than another?

We are leaving Saturday morning. I would really appreciate an answer.
Anything that we can do to prevent blisters is very important to me.

Thanks
Mary

It's anti-perspirant. Deodorant would just make them less likely to smell.

The theory is you try to keep your feet dry (1 of the contributing factors to blisters). However, you need to mind your feet for swelling if you take this route since your feet are supposed to sweat and you are effectively preempting the ability of the feet to do their job. I personally don't like to override thousands of years of biological evolution, but some people report this tactic works well. I'd just not do it for 8 days straight. :confused3

Good luck,
Joe

another thing that is helpful is to avoid cotton socks. THey stay damp and because of that they create more friction which causes the blister.

I've found that the smartwool brand socks are the best. It's all DH wears. THey're nice and cushy and not at all hot like one would think wool would be.

The reason is because even if they're damp from sweat/water, they still remain plush and don't get all compacted the way the cotton ones do. It has something to do with wicking but I'm not entirely sure the logistics on that one.

on our recent trip, I kept using Gold Bond and only wound up with one small blister. They usually ruin my trip!

Actually the tips concerning blister prevention and using anti-perspirant suggest using the Arrid cream anti-perspirant. It costs about 2 or 3 bucks at Walmart...one tin will last a very long time.

I got our family under armour socks from Dicks they keep your feet dry by pulling the moisture away and they really do work. THis summer when it was 90 degrees and humid I had them on with my tennis shoes all day. When I took them off my feet were dry and the socks were dry!!

If you live in an area with a sporting goods store or a specailty store that caters to runners, go there. I have run several marathons in 80+ degree heat. I use Bodyglide brand lubricant on my feet. I also wear microfiber socks (under armor is one of many brands). This simple combination works like a champ. Bodyglide comes in a roll-on form, like Ban deoderant. Easy and quick to apply. Washes off with soap and water, no smell and best of all, no blisters!

That seemed to work for our shoes, plus Dr. Scholls really cushioned, super shoe inserts. The Mole Skin can be cut to any size and is soft and flexible. Just wanted to put in my 2 cents....
Hey, any good tips are worth trying on those poor ole' tired feet. :teeth: :flower: ;)

We've used the stick arrid deodorat-----my husband didn't believe me---he got the sore feet----we didn't Need I say more? :flower:

6 or 7 trips ago, major problems with blisters and I wore the most expensive jogging shoe New Balanced offered....since then I only wear a good walking sneaker (which is 1/2 the cost of jogging shoes) and never had a problem with my feet (knock on wood)

Be sure to cut it before you go- it can't be ripped. I usually cut several sizes and shapes and put them in a baggie and throw them in a bag for the day. I take where ever I travel.

We were there the end of Aug/first of Sept. After the first day my son's feet were wrinkled like prunes from sweating. I had worn socks with cool max. The next day I sprayed his feet with Secret antiperspirant(He thought that I had lost it) but it worked. He then started to spray his feet every day. We did not get any blisters. I had a couple different socks with cool max and just loved them.

Before we even head out of the room I spray down everyone's feet with spray anti-perspirant (kids included). We've done this for several trips now and it really helps.

We just returned and learned a very valuable lesson concerning blisters. I always thought I was doing the right thing by having my kids wear water shoes to the water parks. This last trip, DD4 got a pretty bad blister on her foot from wearing water shoes one day at Typhoon Lagoon. Well, we took her back to the hotel, and for the next two days, doctored it up with anitbiotic ointment, band aids, etc. On the third day of our trip, we woke up to find the blister was infected and actually looked pretty bad. We had a really bad experience with MRSA a couple of years ago with my son and this honestly looked like a staff infection. We debated on taking her on to the medical clinic, but chose to just go on to AK and take her to the First Aid station there. They were awesome. They cleaned it really good, gave us Polysporin to apply and wrapped it up really good. They also told us that if it didn't get better, to immediately take her to the clinic. From that point on, the sore got much better and I am really glad we took her in when we did. Long story short, find an alternative for those water shoes in the waterparks. I didn't make DS wear them and he never had a problem.

I agree. My daughters' feet got tore up wearing water socks at BB. Later that week we went to TL and I had them wear their sandals instead and they did much better.

Two trips now I have sprayed everybody's feet with anti-perspirant and NO BLISTERS!! Works great!

If you do happen to get a blister...put a bandaid on and cover the blister with a corn pad ( it has a hole in the middle) it stops the shoe from rubbing on the blistered area!

If you already have a blister!!
Blister bandaids. They are more $$ than regular bandaids, but they have a cushion on them to protect the blistered area. Sometimes they are hard to find, but be persistant in looking thru the bandaid section, or try looking in the foot care section.

If you are blister prone, they are a life saver. Mole skin saved me from having to use the blister bandaids because as soon as a hot spot started, stopped and applied already cut mole skin on foot, but some people are just blister prone.

Other ways to prevent blisters:
Wear shoes that fit you well and that you are used to walking long distances in. This may require you to test out some of your shoes and take a lot of test walks to get the shoes well broken in and your feet well adjusted to the shoes. But, the extra walks are good training for getting in shape for Disney (am I the only one who designs my workouts to be Disney specific starting a few months before the trip? Lots of longer walks, many with backpacks. More focus on endurance than on speed.). Also, wearing the shoes regularly before you go to Disney will help build up the needed callouses on your feet so that you won't have to worry about blisters (think of the callouses as your own, built in, mole skin.)

Mutlple pairs of socks will help some, especially if you start with a sock liner, microfiber, polypro, wicking nylon, coolmax, etc sock. That will help keep your feet dry to start with, but it alone (along with the anti-perspirant trick) won't completely eliminate the possibility of blisters.

Duct tape is also an amazing thing that can help prevent blisters. When you start to get a hot spot or blister, put mole skin (or just duct tape, works well too) on the hot spot and also on the shoe where it is rubbing on your foot. That should help smooth out the area and should go a long way towards preventing blisters. You can create a small roll of duct tape just by wrapping some tape around it self into a little roll, or put some on your water bottle so you don't have to take the whole roll with you.

Another alternative to mole skin is the Band-Aid brand (or 3M, but I like the Band-Aid brand. Don't bother with the store brands, they're not near as good) sport of foam band-aids. Get the large ones (2in wide) and cut the pad off so you have two pieces of slightly squishy, very adhesive magical foot relief. Works great and much less cost than mole skin.

Cool max socks are great. I was surprised how well they worked. The first day my son's feet in regular socks were wrinked up from wetness. Mine in cool max were dry and smooth.
