Does anyone know if this is a possibility?

The teachers in our school district have been on strike since Tuesday and it will continue tomorrow as well.
My friend who also has a dd in my sons grade told me that because the teachers can only strike for so many days that the kids will probably have to make up days on Saturday in order to get in the required 180 days.
I sure hope not. But just wondered if this has been the case in any other school districts.

You could make them up on Saturdays, at the end of the year, by minutes added to the regular school day. Its up to your district and if your state approves.

Oh I didn't even think about adding time to the school day. That would be a clever way to do it. Right now the teachers have to be back by Feb. 14th, but could strike again. Someone said they may come back but strike at the start of the next school year. Sounds like it could be a long road.

They'll make them up any way they can. They'll likely start by taking vacation days away and figure it out from there.

In our old district our brand new HS was late opening and had to make up days by having Saturday classes. Lots of kids didn't go but the school still had to have those 180 days.

Gosh, i'll miss being in Florida without my kids over Springbreak. Just kidding!
I would never go without them.

One year our school system had to make up snow days on Saturdays because the built in snow days had been used up and graduation had already been pushed back.

Right now the rumour for our school system is to use Good Friday as a make-up day if we have anymore snow/fog days. Personally, I think it's a good idea because supposedly we have separation of church and state although you'd never know it from how our school calendar is set. :sad2: Nothing like taking a full 2 weeks off for Christmas....errrrr excuse me Winter break then having to make up snow days in June because they only built in 3 snow days.

WoW! Thats crazy!

When we had to make up a bunch of dayas due to hurricanes, they first proposed Saturdays. The teachers and parents all balked at that. We wound up using most holidays, work days, anything that would have been a day off. I think they would only use Saturdays as a last resort. Can you imagine how many kids would not show up?

When the near by school district went on strike a few years ago for about a 2 months the school had something like 2 saturday school days, had like all Teacher In Services on the Weekends and went to school during what would have been there winter break and only got christmas day off and christmas day and new years day off and they ended up going to school till the middle of July actually some of the students went on strike in the summer and on the 2 saturdays

In PA, they will make you use any holidays that are in the calendar, with the exception of Memorial Day and maybe Good Friday. Teacher strikes in PA can last no longer than 21 days. Mandatory attendance on Saturdays has never been approved by the state. It shouldn't be necessary if you use up all the holidays and days at the end of June.

Seems by the look of things this will be going on for a very long time. Not sure if I understand the middle of the year strike.

Have you considered asking this question to your areas newspaper? Request they consider doing a story about the eventual consequences of this strike that will involve the children.

It has been all speculation. Nothing will be decided until the strike is over. I just posted the question about Saturday make up days here to see if it has ever been done anywhere else.

Our kids were required to go on Saturdays for about 4 or 5 weeks. The teachers begged us NOT to send them, so we didn't.

When we were striking a few years ago, I think Sat classes were the last resort. I believe we had until June 30 (end of the fiscal year?) to make up days and that's what we ended up doing. Vacations were shortened (we were on strike in Oct), snow days were gone and then they added on to the end of the year (I think that was mostly snow days we had to make up). We were only on strike for about 10 days though.

I remember WAAAAY back when I was in 3rd grade we had to go on a Saturday to make up a day that school was out because the heating system would not work. We watched cartoons all day!!!
