Does anyone know if it is possible for antibiotics to cause hyperactivity?

I specifically asked for a dye-free form of amoxicillin for my dd b/c we recently discovered that red and yellow food dye make her hyperactive and out of control. She has strep. So they gave me a white, chewable tablet (amoxicillin). After a few doses, I called the pharmacy to ask them to double check the ingredient list for dyes b/c she was bouncing off the walls from the very first dose! They said there is no dye listed.

Is is possible that it is the drug itself that is doing it?

That poor child!!!!! and poor you!

Chances are there is an additive or preservative in there that your child is also sensitive to. I fit were me ...my curiosity would have gotten the better of me. I'd get a complete list of ingredients and ask my allergist.

Ceclor makes my ds very hyper. But I believe it has red dye in it (which is known to cause hyperactivity). Amoxicillin never did make him hyper (but it's too weak to help him feel better if he gets sick, he has to have zithromax or ominicef).

Call your dd's dr and ask him if it should make her hyper.

Central Nervous System: Reversible hyperactivity, agitation, anxiety, insomnia, confusion, behavioral changes, and/or dizziness have been reported rarely.

So I guess that answers my question!:bounce: I guess the next 9 days will be a challenge!
