Does anyone know if a "leaking" ovarian cyst and a "ruptured" cyst are the same

I am having some abdominal pain and bloating so went to OBGYN today. He did an ultrasound and told me I had a "leaking" cyst on my right ovary. I went home and googled it of course and everything I've read says that if a cyst is in fact "leaking" it has ruptured. Now the good DR never used the word "ruptured" and didn't seem too concerned so should I be????

I don't know the answer to your question specifically but I had a ruptured cyst when I was in college and it was some of the worst pain I have ever experienced-including childbirth. It might be worth a call to him again tomorrow and clarify what he meant.

What was done about it?? Did you have bloating in your abdomen???

When I was in my early 20's I had a cyst that was "leaking into itself" and was causing the fallopian tube to twist. Some of the worst pain I have ever felt! I also had one rupture. The leaking one was by far more painful but probably because it was sustained pain. The doc gave me pain pills and said that the leaking cyst would rupture in a few days. I went back at the end of the week and it was gone. I feel for you though.

Nothing really was done because mine had ruptured and was gone. I don't recall having any bloating. It woke me up early one morning and hurt so bad I threw up. My mom took me into the dr and I am pretty sure it finally "popped" there because I had some VERY intense pain and then it felt better-not 100% but tolerable. By the next day I was fine.

Why don't you call the DR back tonight, tell him or her you are worried and don't fully understand what is going on with your body? I don't think it's unreasonable to call back and ask what you should expect, is there risk of infection, can this happen again ect. I know I would, and I wouldn't feel bad about it either. Something like that diagnosis can take the wind out of you and leave you shocked for a while.

I am not new to ovarian cysts! I have been diagnosed with 4 in the past 8 years. Most of them did not hurt at all but this is the first time that he referred to one of my cysts as leaking and the first time I have had this kind of stomach bloating. I did ask him a few questions while I was in his office today but then thought of lots more I should have asked once I got home. Just kinda wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.

I wish mine had just leaked!!! I do not have children yet but the pain was so intense and horrible. You will know when one bursts trust me.

I agree with the pp's. I've had kidney stones in the past and thought for sure thats what it was again, but after the u/s it was confirmed as a ruptured ovarian cyst.

Since you are on here typing, I would assume a leaking cyst is not the same as a rutured one. It is the worse pain I ever felt , including 2 bouts with kidney stones and 2 childbirths.

Thanks for your replies! This is pretty painful but not as painful as all that so Im going to assume the two are different!

I had a leaking cyst before. The pain was bad but not intolerable. My cyst wasn't the kind that could rupture and then be okay. Mine had to be removed. Since it started leaking the doctor moved my surgery date up.
