Does anyone know how to "make" a handbag?

I'm trying to come up with some cute craft projects for when we go on vacation. We will have a few preteen girls and I thought it might be fun to go pick out some fabrics to make purses. Has anyone done anything like this or can you recommend any other crafts?

We like to pick up old blue jeans at garage sales for .25-$1.00....cut off the legs so it looks like a skirt, then sew the bottom shut. Either sew a belt on for a handle or string one thru the belt loops...Decorate with fabric paints and patches and voila a cheap easy to make bag. You can use any size jeans to make it as big or as small as you like.. I will look for a link and pm it to you for better instructions and maybe a pix.

Mem-ries...LOL

I made a handbag in 7th grade Home-Economics. (remember that class? Taught us girls how to be a perfect homemaker :lmao: )

I loved that thing, but I can't remember how to make one. Sorry

I'm planning on doing a purse project with my girl scouts when we start our meeting again in the fall. You take a t-shirt ( vacation t-shirts are great :sunny: ) , cut off the sleeves, stich the bottom and sides, make a casing at the top, and either add heavy grosgrain ribbon for handles, or pre-made bamboo or wood handles from craft store.

At Michael's last year, we sold little (ready-made) purses that looked like this; they were really cute and sold like crazy. You could get little glue-on rhinestones or patches or whatever and let the girls go nuts.

they have little canvas bags at Wal-Mart in the craft section for $2.97 (several different colors) add craft paint, iron on patches, rhinestones, ribbon or whatever else you can come up with. My DD (10) made one last weekend for a travel what-not bag, cheap and useful.

My girlfriend makes them out of recycled juice pouches. If you do a google search you will see some examples. I think you need a machine though.

Why not decorate some plain flip flops? I have seen really cheap flops that have been decorated with rhinestones and/or torn strips of fabric that are tied into the tops that are really cute and then folks sell them for big bucks.

You could also take the leg (tube) & sew the bottom straight across shut, leave one side of the leg longer to be a flap, that flips over the bag. You can apply appliques to the flap. Take the other leg & make a long strap out of it.

I made both these kinds of jean bags when I was a teen. Ahh, the memories. They were my favorite bags at the time. :goodvibes

You can always do the cigar box purses, too. I really like those. :teeth:

i agree, beading is cheaper and you could make a lot out of it...aside from anklets, you can make necklaces, bracelets or maybe you can also use it to decorate your handbags ;)

Here's another way--requires sewing though. Pick up about a half yard of fabric--try to get something with a little weight to it--not neccesarily denim or cordoroy, but something heavier than a "silky" fabric. (remnants work fine) You'll also need a solid matching fabric.

Cut an oval shape that is roughly 2" wider and double the height + 2" of the size you want the bag to be. Then cut one rounded end straight across. Then cut a half oval of the same dimensions as half of what you already cut.

Next, Take the diameter of your first piece, add five to ten inches if you like long straps, and cut a strip in that length and 2-4" wide, again, depending on the size you'l like the finished bag to be.

Next, pin it all together. The long strip is going to basically "wrap around the enture bag and become the bottom/sides/strap. You'll want to sew this into a tube, turn it inside out, stitch your "hole" shut and press it flat before you begin the rest of the assembly. The long oval will be the back, and will flap over the front. The half oval will form the front of the bag. Use the solid material as your lining.

The decorate as you'd like. I used to make these when I was in junior high--I also made my own skirts, and matched my pocketbook to my skirt. :)
