Does Anyone Know about Theatrical Lighting?

Oh snap--you can do that with a purchased stock gobo and rented Lieko for a quarter of the cost!

Tell Julie that "Mrs. Duck" sent you--she'll take good care of ya!

And I just gave away the meaning behind my user name--it directly relates to this thread! ;)

Hi

I thought I would add my name to the Lighting wife list! He calls himself LightGuru! My DH does mostly corporate stuff too! That way he's only gone a week or so at a time, though sometimes the weeks run into each other and one week turns into seven weeks . . .

We has been on the road with theatre shows before we had kids, but now that we have kids the only way he would go on the road is if a) we could go too, and b) it was a "clean" environment, like Cirque de Soleil, or a tame band!

Any idea about lighting designer/director jobs at Disney? I'm trying to convince DH this is the way to go!

Sorry about butting in!

Disney hires technical stage hands, but almost always you have to start at Pleasure Island and DTD--often p/t--and work your way up. I've got a friend on the tech crew who's been with WDW for over ten years, and he's doing great, but he's now in management. he worked when and whereever they needed him to for years to get that position, including a ton over OT.

Starting pay for techs last time I checked was maybe $10 an hour. Additionally I'm not sure they would sponsor your DH for a work Visa for that type of position. He might be better off trying to get in with Cirq in Montreal then transferring.

They only pay $10.00 an hour  . !? Is that for someone just getting into the field or is that for someone with experience?

You can have 20 years of experience, but you pretty much start on the bottom rung at WDW. DH looked into it at one point, it was so not worth it!

Holy sh. How can they even justify that? I can understand a kid just getting his or her chops wet, but someone with experience? Do they have a high turnover rate?

I have a few friends and acquaintances who have gone the Disney route in lighting/tech and none of them stayed more than a few years. The derogatory term they used for Disney employment was Mouswich... most started as interns and were thrilled to get the continued employment but it generally isn't a lucrative career move.

10$ per hour? :rotfl2: You've go to be kidding me! DH makes WAY, WAY more than that (even in CDN dollars it's WAY, WAY more!). Good to know, now I'll stop hounding him about applying there for work! I thought WDW would be looking for established people, since the shows and architectural lighting is pretty high end.

Guess it'll be a vacation only destination.

They have a few designers, then everything is programmed and the tech just has to babysit. It's something you could teach a first year tech to run in under ten minutes.
