Does anyone here work for the public school system?

My youngest son's daycare also requires it. No choice. I just filled in everything except the SSN because we weren't going to qualify, so I knew they didn't need that.

My DD's teacher told me to just throw the form away if I wasn't interested. (But I'm not in MA)

I know I'm only reiterating what has been said, but I teach in MA and my kids go to public schools as well and DD was in public pre-school the last 2 years. While we get the forms every year I have never had a problem not filling one out. HOWEVER, our school already qualifies for some Title 1 funding based on the number of free/ reduced lunch students. A problem for the school can occur when it has enough children who meet the guidelines but many of those parents who would qualify choose to send their child in with a lunch from home. Which is, of course, their choice, but the school loses big $ in this scenario. Our school was almost in this position several years back but it didn't happen. We would have lost some wonderful reading and math support. I wonder if your school is choosing the pre-school parents to try and get an idea if they qualify for funding or to help qualify them for funding? :confused3

I wouldn't be giving the school my ssn or our income information. In my opinion that's really none of their business. If they absolutely need the forms back i'd fill out name address dob on my child and put N/A or attach a letter stating you don't qualify based on income and under no circumstances are you willing to disclose your income level and social security numbers.
My kids will both be going to private school and we will also not be giving this info to anyone there. I feel that information is private unless you need financial aid in which case that is a need to know aspect of providing the aid.

They're trying to get every penny of Title I funding they can, and are pushing hard to make sure everyone fills it out. If you want them to go away, write a note on the form stating that you can't fill it out for religious reasons.

Yes, that's a stupid lie, but it will make them go away!

I'm a teacher and so the district knows danged well how much money I have coming in, yet they send the forms every year. I won't waste my time...my filling out the form isn't going to do them any good!

They want everyone to fill it out because if you qualify they get federal $ even if your child doesn't make use of the program. Title I funds are based on the number of students who are economically disadvantaged based on the Free or reduced lunch apps.

You do not have to fill it out. I refuse every year. I know that we don't qualify and I'm not interested in providing that personal info. If I were getting bugged, I would simply call and tell them once and for all that we will not be filling out the form.

Private school has the right to deny your children entrance for any reason, so not filling out a form they tell you to fill out may get your kids right back in public school.

My sons school does this and they specify that is for funding. I guess the more lower income families, means the school will get more money.

Granted we live in MI and my DD goes to a charter school, but she got those same forms too. They said they needed them on file for every student whether they qualified for free/reduced lunch or not because part of their funding is based on them. However, they gave us a shorter form to fill out if we knew we would not qualify.

It probably isn't an issue, as private schools don't get their funding from the state.

If you aren't comfortable about giving certain items of info then let the school know that but really in the time it took to go through this whole thread and post you could have filled out and returned the form. Just fill it out to your level of comfort I mean it's going to your children's school, not a door-to-door salesman or mysterious phone call. I was surprised when we qualified for reduced lunch at my daughter's school which isn't totally relevant b/c her school gets universal free lunch and breakfast. It's a good thing too, I substitute teach for the district and I know that there are children who almost only get to eat at school. It's also very important for other funding as some posters have pointed out.

Exactly. But if it was a REQUIREMENT we would not answer the question of income. We'd tell them we do no qualify and leave it at that. I firmly believe unless you need loans/credit or you need financial aid there is no other reason you should have to give your income information. But that's just me.

The post is 3 days old:confused3

I am a teacher in NY and I worked at a preschool before that. The preschool wants you to fill it out in the hopes that it will save THEM money. You do not have to. When there are low income families they are provided a subsidy for food. You have every right to tell them that you are not comfortable filling it out.

My thoughts exactly, Even if you don’t qualify, if it means more funding for you child’s school what is the big deal? I say take two minutes fill the form out and leave out SS#’s

If I don't qualify it means no extra funding for the school. I know I don't qualify, so would I want to put so much personal information out there?

my ds is in pre-k in ny they sent form home along with a letter stating that the children will be served a family style breakfast every morning. The letter went on to state that this would be provided at no cost to us regardless of income. If you didn't qualify for free or reduced meals the school district would pay the cost of breakfast for you. I was shocked to learn we qualified. I'm a sahm but dh makes good living.
