Does anyone here use a "price-book" for groceries?

I just ordered one from www.dollarstretcher.com since I've been thinking about doing this for months. I finally bit the bullet and ordered it. I'm hoping it'll help me control my grocery bills. I know there have been tons of threads on that, so I won't go down that road, but I'm just curious if anyone uses one, and if so, what do you think? Is it easy? Does it work?

When I clicked to read this thread I thought you meant some sort of price tracking notebook. That is what I use. I record prices alphabetically in a little binder when I find a low price. THat way, if something is on sale somewhere, I can verify if it is a good price. But honestly, most of the bigger categories I have memorized the lowest unit price I usually pay. What did you buy?.........................P

I just jot it down in a table and I have committed it to memory.

I have put it in an Excel spreadsheet, and gone from there.

pjilla, that's what it is. It's basically the same thing that you are describing. I just bought a fancier one that's all set up for me.

I tried to make my own at home and it didn't turn out very good. I figure the money I save on groceries should pay for this item many times over. That's what I hope anyway. :)

I just can't remember stuff in my head and I'm a very "organize" type of person, so I didn't want to just do a sheet of paper.

I'm just curious how people use theirs. Do you erase every time you find a lower price?

Sometimes, if I have written in pencil. Otherwise I neatly cross out an re-write the price............P

ohhhhhh you're talking about that lil purple notebook thats at the bottom of my purse.........ya know that lil book that I always seem to get out only when I'm cleaning receipts and coupons out of my purse......that lil book that sits waiting in the bottom of my purse when I just grab my wallet and run into the grocery? ;) Yep its a great lil book......

I used to, but don't so much anymore, mostly because I tend to buy more or less the same things week after week and have pretty much memorized the "regular" prices of what I normally buy so I recognize a good deal when I see it. I think having the book made me better able to do that, though....I think eventually you internalize the process.

Of course, now I'm kinda thinking maybe I'll start another one, just to see how I'm doing with the "in my head" method.

I've been thinking of starting one for so long, and I just decided to do it, finally. I can't wait to get it. I've actually been saving receipts and ads from the past few months. I haven't saved them ALL, as I'm a cleaner and like to get rid of junk just laying around, but I did save some, so I hope I can get a good start.

I really hope I see some savings. I assume I will, but I'm not sure how to do this, so it may take a while... I figured it was worth a try atleast. Just clipping coupons dosen't cut it any longer, as I've found the store brands are usually cheaper, even with a coupon.

Cajundixie - YES, that's the book I'm talking about! Go ahead, get it out! ;)
