Does anyone have whole house water filtration?

We want to get rid of hard water stains but DH doesn't like soft water. Wondering if this would work.

We have a charcoal filter where the water line comes in the house. Every so often we have to go put in a new filter (about $7 or $8) and we have awesome water again!!

That's the sort of thing we were looking at but it says 'sediment' and we're so goofy we don't know if that means 'the stuff that causes hard water stains!'

We like ours a lot-wish we had done it when we built our house. It has improved the taste a lot. It won't make your water soft, but it will filter out the sediments and containiments. We have a "drinking water" one and it was fairly simple for dh and I to install.

We have hard water--lots of iron that causes rust stains, sediment, the whole thing, and we do have a water "softener", but it does more than that. It takes the sediment out and neutralizes the pH. It is a big unit, and it was pricey--about $3400 if I recall. Our water isn't "soft"--I know what your husband means--but it isn't hard anymore either; the soap lathers, and as long as we keep up with replenishing the salt we don't get the stains. Prior to having this unit, our fixtures were all ruined and we had to replace toilets and some faucets. BTW, it also tastes great!

we have a peroxide softening system. it has a peroxide tank and a salt tank... takes the smell out and makes the water softer (not too soft though - it "feels" good). Problem is if you do any type of hair coloring, your color will change somewhat from the peroxide... and it is enough to drive me crazy as I have (or used to have) reddish brown hair... my colorist knows just the formula so I don't end up brassy. The system was costly, and we have to fill with peroxide every couple months (usually about $40)

We are really just debating between the water softener and the filter. DH had resigned himself to soft water until we saw the filters. If the filters got rid of all the lime (indiana=water full of lime) I think that would be good enough. I think I will try to talk DH into trying this instead.

I am looking into the filters too! We have a small water company that invests no money into the aging system, they only repair pipes when they break. I don't like soft water, but we have a lot of sediment and residue in our system. I actually replaced a dishwasher thinking it was shot, but discovered one of the elbows in the piping was so clogged with sediment that the water wasn't getting through.

You may want to check on the charcoal system then if the lime is what you are wanting to remove the most. I do know it has kept us from having the stains on our "appliances". (trying to figure out how to word that one!) It's not expensive to buy and it was very easy to put in--it's inline so you just cut the pipes where the water comes in and seal it all back up. It looks sort of like a 46 oz cup but a little bigger and clear so you can see the filter in it and has a screw on top with a pressure release valve. To change out the filter, you just cut the water off to that line, press the pressure release valve, unscrew the bottom clear cup part, replace the filter in it and screw it back together. That's it!! It takes me about 5 minutes total and I don't have to wait for DH to come home from work to do it.

Call a plumber or company that does water testing and have them recommend something. We have a lot of iron and sediment in our water and without a softener I couldn't even do the laundry, we also have a filter to cut down on the sediment which can make the softener, water heater and filtration system last longer. We have a filtration for the drinking water as well.

I second this recommendation. Sounds like we had the same type of situation as ceecee. Initially, we had a water system from a local company, and it didn't hold up or do the job. After 7-8 years we went out and got prices from Culligan and Grecco and Haines. They will come out and test the water for all sorts of stuff, and they will give you choice to solve your problem. Both quotes were in the same ballpark, but my husband like the "culligan man" so we went with them. Again, just to reiterate, with the right balance, your water won't be "soft", it just won't be "hard" and unappealing.
