Does anyone have a good recipe for naan?

I know this is a long shot, but I'm hopeful. We love love love Indian food and typically eat it several times a month. Naan is such a budget-buster for me, though! The Tandoori brand that we usually buy can be >$3.99 for two little flatbreads -- not nearly enough to split 5 ways when it's everyone's favorite part of the meal. It kills me! I've seen recipes online but they usually have mixed reviews. It can't possibly be that hard to make. Does anyone have a tried & true recipe that they can share?

Thanks if you can help!

I've never made naan, not sure you can do it successfully without a tandoor. I assume you're already buying it at an Indian store. Our Indian store is much cheaper than the grocery store. My Target also has decent naan for $2.99, which would be a little bit of savings.

I have to drive 15 miles to get to a grocery store. An Indian market? I think the closest one is 3 hours away. Probably not much of a savings till I get all the way there and home again! Thanks for the suggestion, though.

I did watch the video that java posted -- I think I'll give that a try. I definitely didn't know that the dough should be that sticky, so the tutorial was very helpful.

Thanks for the ideas!

Do you have a Trader Joe's nearby? We buy the frozen Naan (four pieces for $1.99). We like it a lot -- plus it's always on hand in our freezer. I think they also have some in their baked goods.

I use a recipe that I got off of allrecipes.com and have gotten excellent results. Just go to that site and search for naan (it's comes up as the first one and was submitted by Mic). They are so delicious homemade and fresh off the grill!!

Ohhh....didn't know Trader Joe's carried this. Definitely on my list for next time. Thanks so much for the tip. I usually get mine at BJ's but they are frequently out. I forget the amount but it is reasonable priced.

Great youtube video ~ I love naan. I'm off to check allrecipes.com - I want to try some baking some naan using my mom's gas stove later today!

Thanks, but there's no TJ's close by. I just checked their website and the closest is 117 miles away. I'm not kidding -- we're in the middle of nowhere.

I'll check allrecipes. I definitely need to learn to make it.

Try making the youtube guys butter chicken.....:love:

I use any of the recipes for dough from "Artisan Bread in 5 minutes a Day." The basic recipe is online everywhere if you Google it. I just roll it out, heat some ghee (clarified butter--olive oil would work fine) and cook the flatbread in the skillet.

I'm pretty sure it would work with frozen pizza dough, too....

I LOVE Naan!!!!! Meijer does carry it, when it shows up on the reduced bakegoods rack I freeze it.

Do you happen to live near Huntingdon, PA? DH is from there and the closest 'civilization' and popular stores are about 45 -60 mins away. Do you have a target by you? My target carries nann and it's much cheaper than the tandoori brand my grocery store carries. It's about $2 for 2 pieces.

Whenever I see it on sale I stock up.

Good luck

Lara

Thanks for asking this question OP. My family loves naan too. At even a $1 pop x 6 people x 2 each=$12 just for the bread for a meal, that I'm sure costs pennies to make. My family fights over it. Please update to let us know which recipes you enjoyed. Thanks.

We love Naan in this house...I'm going to try this recipe today, can't wait!!!

Ingredients

* .25 oz Active Dry Yeast
* 4 Tbsp White Sugar
* 1 Cup Warm Water
* 1 Beaten Egg
* 3 Tbsp Milk
* Tsp Salt
* 4 ½ Cups Bread Flour
* ¼ Cup Melted Butter

Method

* In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water, until frothy.

Stir in sugar, milk, egg, salt, and enough flour to make a soft dough.

Knead for 6 to 8 minutes on a lightly floured surface, or until smooth.

Place dough in a well oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and set aside to rise. Let it rise until the dough has doubled in volume around 30 mins.

Pinch off small amounts of dough to make 10 pieces. Roll into balls, and allow to rise again.

While the dough is rising, preheat grill to high.

At grill side, roll one ball of dough out into a thin circle. Lightly oil grill. Place dough on grill, and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until puffy and lightly browned. Brush uncooked side with butter, and turn over.

Brush cooked side with butter, and cook until done, another 2 to 4 minutes.

Remove from grill, and continue cooking until all the naan has been prepared.

Enjoy!.

Tips

* Try mixing some diced Garlic to the butter and making Garlic Naan!

Our Costco sells Naan. We just had some last night! I stuck them in the oven with butter and garlic on top! YUM!

I find it is really too much trouble to make. I have made chapatis many times (bread from Southern India that I grew up on) but Naan requires ghee and quite a bit more work and tastes much better from a tandoori oven, which I don't have.

My friend made this recipe a few weeks ago and everyone loved it! She and another friend use this cookbook often and bring their breads to book club for all of us to sample.
