Does anyone have a child with scoliosis?

I did quite a bit of research on this a while back, as my daughter was diagnosed at age 6 (she's now 10) with slight scoliosis. She's monitored by an orthopedist every 6-8 months and my her regular physician, and it's remained the same. They both warn us, though, that when she hits adolescence and has growth spurts, it could likely worsen and we'll look at treatment options then.

I just wanted to say that there have been no clinical trials on the effectiveness of chiropractic in treating scoliosis. I believe there's one underway now, but I would trust current doctors in recommending treatment. While I'm sure friends are well meaning, I would just respond that you and your doctors are working together and following a treatment plan that's best for your child.

Hugs to you in dealing with a difficult situation for your teens.

Thank you all for your words of encouragement. He's been doing well but the last 24 hrs were rough. It was like he's starting to realize that this brace isn't going away. We've told him but I don't think he mentally understands long term. Last night went great and he's in good spirits this morning so we will just keep going! So thankful to have found moms who understand where we are at!

Glad to hear that he had a good night last night. Hopefully you've turned the corner and things will continue to improve.

InMemory and laughingplace, just wondering if your teens are flat-footed? That's what initially alerted our pediatrician to my DDs curvature. She is seriously flat-footed, no arch whatsoever. She's hyper-flexible (also called double-jointed) and possibly/probably has a mild case of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. There's no test for it, so she's just being monitored regularly by a team of doctors. In the last few years she's been referred to an orthopedist, dermatologist, geneticist, cardiologist and ophthalmologist (sp?) Everything has been good, and they've all gotten a "baseline" and continue to monitor her for any changes.

Just wondering if there are others here who've been diagnosed with EDS.

No, I don't think DD is flat-footed. Her pediatrician said that sometimes scoliosis develops in adolescence, particularly if there's been a decent growth spurt. This is what I believe happened in DD's case.

He does have flat feet but is not flexible. We do not currently have a diagnosis. He's never quite fit a specific category. In researching about scoliosis however I came across xxyy syndrome and I'm almost positive it's him. The list of symptoms is long and he falls into everyone of them. After we finish with getting used to this phase I will be working with his Dr to see. It's a blood test. If his Dr can't do it I know he will set us up with a geneticist. I was so excited the day I found it! I'm almost positive, time will tell. Trying not to get my hopes up, just in case.

Joining this thread as last week the school screening noticed my DD (11.5) had a curve in her back. We saw the ped. on Friday, who first said we will just do a baseline xray & monitor. X-rays showed a 10 degree curvature in the thorasic region, and a 23 degree curvature in the lower lumbar region. Now we are off to Scottish Rite in Dallas & thrilled that we were able to schedule an appt. in 10 days!

But...scared. It's hard to put on a brave face for her all the time.

I am also wondering about our trip at Thanksgiving. DD was so excited that she has finally overcome her fear of roller coasters! It can't be comfortable for her to be in a brace all day, getting on and off of all of the rides? I am thinking about trying to pull her out of school & do a quick trip before she starts wearing a brace. (Assuming she will wear one?)

Lastly, DD did have flat feet. She wore braces & then orthotics from 4-7 yrs old. She is a bit double jointed, and has been diagnosed with low muscle tone. I am worried that the low muscle tone will make the scoliosis worse, so I am determined to help her build back strength! Her muscles on one side of her back are super tight - the side where the curve bows out. So I am eager to see if massage therapy can keep that side loose, while strengthening the other side? I don't think this will help strengthen, but perhaps it will keep the curve from progressing?

Good luck with your appointment. DD has a 26 degree curve and we weren't really well prepared for being told she'll need a brace. So, my advice is to be prepared for anything.

I don't know how the brace will be for riding roller coasters and rides. DD will get her brace in 2 weeks, but we don't go to DL until August. I fear the brace is going to be uncomfortable in the heat.
