Does anyone have a blood pressure monitor?

I bought one last week because the last few times I've been to the Doctor mine has been quite high. Everyone (even me) is recording around 110/65 which I'm sure is way too low. As it cost 100 quid, I'm thinking of taking it back, but I just wondered if anyone else has one and what sort of recordings you get from it.

'Normal' BP would be about 120/80.
Anything under 90/60 would be considered low and anything over 140/90 high.

I would suggest asking your practise nurse to test you with your own BP monitor and see what she thinks.

Hi Deb

My mum bought one a while back - I can't remember where she got it from but hers has been pretty accurate - I tried it once as I suffer from high BP (the other day at the docs mine was 150/100!!) I am on medication for it but I still have to have it monitored. It was pretty accurate when I used it - maybe there is a fault with yours. Hope you get it sorted.

That's weird, Paula - that's exactly what mine was last week. I'd been to see the nurse the week before for a routine check. It was 139/96, so she asked me to make an appointment with the Doctor. He didn't seem particularly bothered about it, but then he took it and it was even worse! I've got to go back once every six weeks to have it re-checked so he can decide if I need medication.

How strange - I think there's a lot of people out there who suffer from high BP - some don't even know it. I have been on medication for about 4 years now - I've got used to it. I have to go and have it checked again in a couple of weeks - as it get's nearer to our WDW trip I'm getting more anxious as I hate flying. I bet it will be sky high before we go. I think I'll have to get some valium!! LOL

That's exactly what I do. I hate flying too, and my Doctor prescribes me valium (Diazepam). It's not a cure, but it helps.

Deb - I refrained from replying to your thread a couple of days ago because even seeing the words (blood pressure - say it quietly) fills me with absolute dread:o . I suffer from hypertension and - being White Coat Phobic (WCP) - is THE worst thing. Just thinking about going to the doctors for my check ups makes me

.

The more nurses/doctors I have to see, the higher it goes.

After I'd had Katie, they duty registrar refused to let me go home for 6 days because my consultant was away for a long weekend and she "refused to take the responsbility that something might happen to me". Fair enough, but like all the other nurses and doctors tried to point out . . . I'm WCP and therefore the longer I'm in, the worst it gets because I had to keep having my BP checked. The morning my consultant finally returned it was through the roof - and he turned around and said he wasn't surprised cos I'm so scared of hospitals - and sent me straight home where, when the doc and the midwife checked over the following days, it was fine.

So it may be that you're worrying about it, therefore it's raising without you even knowing.

Ask your doctor if he can provide one of the monitors that you're attached to for a min period of 24 hours - that usually settles it, because you're relaxed after a time with it on and your BP returns to normal.

Keep smiling, anyway:p

We just bought a monitor as Dh had dangerously high blood pressure and we needed to keep a close eye on it. Naturally I've been checking mine too as I'm just plain nosey and mine is normally about what you are getting and often lower. I mentioned this to my gp yesterday and she said that was no problem at all and nothing to worry about.

If you do take it back, pop into your local Asda. Our gp recommended the ones there as they had an offer on. We paid £40 for ours and it's the same one the doctor has to loan out to patients.
