Does anyone else have White Noise in their workplace?

They installed White Noise in my workplace yesterday. It sounds like someone left the faucet on "somewhere" or it sounds like an AC blower but it isn't. It comes out of little speakers in the ceiling. I absolutely HATE it. I went home with a headache yesterday and I rarely get headaches. It has been turned down to the lowest setting but it is still too loud. I managed to tape 3 oval eye pads over three of the speakers near me but the sound still "leaks" through. Am I the only one who hates it?

We had it at my last company -- being in cubicles and spending a lot of time on the phone on conference calls and stuff like that it pretty much became necessary.

My current company just has a really loud air conditioning system. :p :p

I am the only one who works here for now.

Why would they bother to install white noise in an office of one person?? The only real purpose of white noise is to help drown out the noises around you.

I was wondering the same thing. Why White Noise for one person. If your the only one there why can't you ask that it be turned off if it bothers you.

We have white noise in our office and it just sounds like a fan or AC is blowing all the time. It takes awhile to get used to but now I don't even notice it.

So it is uniform through out the company. I see employees in the employee health clinic but only one at a time, through three closed doors so it is indeed superfluous. It can't be turned off because it goes to other areas on my floor.

We have constant "white noise" Twelve 3 yr olds that is.

I'm a preschool teacher. :p

I've been in a "white noise" environment at work for 18 years now. They may need to "tweak" the volume at your place... especially if they just installed it. Ironically, it "strains" my ears now when the thing shuts off.

We're all like mice in a maze here -- way too many cubes in too a space that is too small, but no, we don't have white noise. I never heard of it in the workplace until I read this thread.

"White Noise" helps a lot in our offices. Basically the sound is a low volume sound that mimics a TV tuned to an empty channel in the next room. With it I only hear people in the cubes immediately around mine. Beyond that it has to be pretty loud for me to hear it. When the noise is swtiched off, I can hear everything in my "neighborhood". It's very distracting when it's off.

Nope. We just have a lot of loud people who talk all day. Two who sit near me are particularly bad with personal phone calls. I hear more about these peoples personal lives than I ever wanted to know... One girl seems to have a serious , graphic medical issue every other day. Or she's fighting with her boyfriend.

Also, two of the people who sit not that far from me talk all day in Spanish. What they don't know is that I and another friend I have here can understand them at least most of what they are saying). I actually caught them saying something mean about the boss once.

I'd love to have "white noise" instead.
