Thanks again for everyone's advice! What I experienced was not a steady degradation but an immediate drop-off from having to charge a phone at the end of the day after nominal use to a completely dead battery after 4 hours with to use.
Here's a suggestion for you. Try installing the Battery Doctor app on your phone. I have a two year old Galaxy S3 and it has significantly improved my battery life. Do note that you'll have to live without a great deal of push notifications and tinker with the setup on your screen brightness and screen timeout, but I really seem to be getting some significant improvement on battery life with this app.
