I was just wondering if anyone else in the world doesn't go to scrapbook stores to buy everything for scrapbooking?

I personally scrapbook a lot and use stuff from around the house to embelish (sp?) my pages.

I use old birthday or whatever kinds of cards, Free stickers from anything. Old tissue paper from christmas presents, aluminum foil, anything at all that I think would look good in an album. I think all total I have spent about $10 on scrapbooking stuff and that was for special scissors and a cutting tool.

Does anyone else do this?

That's a great idea! You do want to be carfeul that those items don't touch your photos. They could actually accelerate the deteriation of your photos.

That is a great way to really make your book customized for you, though!

While I do use unconventional stuff in my books, I only use AF/LF papers and I've got a lot more than $10 invested in paper... LOL!! Anyway... I agree with Carrie... it's definitely an awesome idea to use this stuff as long as your pictures are matted so the acid doesn't travel to your pictures.

With that said, I have a scrapbook that belonged to my mom from like the 40s or 50s and everything except for the tape she used (including the pencil notations) is still in good shape. She saved napkins, itineraries, newspaper articles... you name it, it's in there.

nope I am a collector of all things scrapping....can't help myself! LOL! I need stuff LOTS OF IT!
But you should hook up with NICURN, she is the queen of the hardware store for her scrap books! All kinds of things she finds to use! LOL!

I dont use much non "approved" scrapbook stuff as I don't want to worry about the whole Acid thing and take a chance in the future...

I incorporate a LOT of memorabilia into my books but if it hasn't been copied onto acid free paper/cardstock (like two sided pages in a program for instance) I make sure I mount it on acid free cardstock and if possible group the memorabilia on a separate page - although that doesn't always work.

This past spring we went through my mom's scrapbooks going back to the 40s & 50s and while many items were in pretty good shape there were some problems. For instance she had an Easter balloon in there and it had "glued" to the facing page and was now shattering. Also she had attached the envelopes that cards had come in to the page by taping the flap to the page and leaving the cards inside. The problem is those have all resealed themselves so it is going to take some work to reopen the envelopes without destroying them.

The memorabilia really helps tell a story, but must be handled carefully.
