does anyone do stockpile garage sales?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what are "stockpile" items? Thanks!

stockpile is when u buy alot of one item

ie. toothpaste.. on sale for 1.79. u have 10 coupons for $1 off.. so u buy 10 and store them .. thats stockpile.

usually involves health and beauty items..

and yes I am guilty. but i only do it for personal use

My mom pointed out that by selling the items cheaply, the other person benefits from my couponing efforts, so I don't feel bad. I'm not a super-stockpiler by any means, but that's only because I don't have time to do it right, lol. Last year, I did 2 sales and made $1000 that went right into the college fund.

So I decided to do it tomorrow but I just got home from work and haven't started setting it up yet. Yikes, I better get moving!

Had my last garage sale five years ago and plan for it to be my last--literally! *LOL*

I just have no patience for people wanting everything for free. If I want to give it away, it goes to a charitable organization! :)

i'm no moral policeman but I sorta feel like garage sale-ing stockpiles isn't 'right'. I don't know why, exactly..but I do. I am like the PP...I give it away to friends and family...homeless shelter...etc...but I don't re-sell it.

I think garage sales are a pit* anyway. I'd rather just do craigslist or donate it for the tax write-off.

maybe because it may be illegal. certain stores and items are sold to consumers for their personal use, not for resale without permission for profit. i dont think colgate would spend the time to hunt down garage sales but technically if they wanted to in some states i think they could have some legal merit to stopping or preventing people from reselling their items like that.

I really don't care if people do this, but I have seen items at CVS marked with stickers that say not for resale or something like that...I know I definitely saw them on razors (which are a frequent coupon/extra care bucks item).

I was saving stock-piled items like soaps, shampoos, and more for a group doing a mission trip. Short story, no one ever came to get the stuff. I was having a garage sale, so I decided to get rid of all the stuff-it was taking up space!

Every bit of it sold! DH said evidently I had it priced too low, but it was free for me, so whatever I got was profit.

That said, I don't think I'd have a GS for stock piled items. Maybe I'd throw some out there if I was having one anyway.

I think this is so that other stores don't try to resell them or people don't try to return them to other stores.

We held our very last yard sale last fall. I never minded getting ready for them, as we always have done so well. I clean everything, organize the items, price low, and will bargain with people. It is time consuming, but they have been very profitable for us in the past. Our last 2 have been a hassle as people are really "nickle and diming" everything, and want free stuff thrown in, and seem to be more rude than in the past, to each other and to us. It used to be a fun day for us - not any longer. Maybe it's just our area or the recent economy, but I know of friends and neighbors who have said the same thing, and now just donate.

Last year I sold stockpiled items for the first time, in with the mix of my other things. I usually stockpile for personal use only, or to donate to shelters, but decided to try to sell some. I suspect a lot of the stockpiled items went to fleamarket dealers, as they bought in bulk, so I know I underpriced. I also overheard numerous "comments" from people as to why I had so many "store items" for sale. Just made me feel very uncomfortable.

So, all in all, I'm done and will now just donate everything I don't need or have extra of.

only did 8-12 today, crowds were dwindling early so we packed up. Did just under $500 and it was mostly stockpile. Don't have much left for tomorrow. I haven't been too ambitious about couponing lately, I've got to get back on track. I don't know how those serious stockpilers do it.

Somebody stole a Vera bag. They are lucky I didn't see them or I would've chased them down the street, don't mess with the Veras! I had them priced really low, they didn't have to resort to stealing. That kind of stuff always surprises me. Usually the people are friendly, we chat, they ask about couponing, etc.

:rotfl: Thank you for my biggest laugh of the day :rotfl:

I think this is so that other stores don't try to resell them or people don't try to return them to other stores.

It is for these reasons AND so that regular people (not just stores) don't resell and make a profit. Such as at a flea market... or a garage sale.
*Not judging though*

I never do garage sales, either having them or buying from them. Even if I did, I would never go and buy someones stock piled food and health and beauty items, I don't know but for some reason it weirds me out. But then again I won't buy any of that stuff from big Lots or any of those types of stores.

I did have one garage sale with a neighbor years ago, people were reaching there hands under her garage and literally trying to crawl under it,(we had it cracked) to get in before it started. To me ( and I am sure I will offend some people) a lot of people who frequent these are just nasty, not all, but a lot of them. Nothing but people wanting something for nothing and pushy as all get out. OK rant over.

I wouldn't buy someone else's stockpile, either, lol. I'd be all worried about how the items were stored, were they in a clean area, etc.

the poor last guy at my sale got given bags and bags of items I didn't want to lug into the house. He was really happy about it but he must've thought I was a loon asking him, "how about these? can you use some of these?" The kids were really glad because he took all of the dreaded Soy Joys!

I hate having garage sales. I don't mind the prep work or the set up. It's the sitting out there and having strangers come up to buy things. Sometimes it's okay, like someone with kids buying our no longer used toys, but sometimes people just creep me out. Or if they are smoking when they walk up - totally turns me off. Maybe next time I will post a sign "non-smoking garage sale" - or "the only things smokin at this sale is the low prices".....ha, ha, ha. Sounds like a car dealer.:lmao:
We usually have our teenage kids take turns outside and I pop my head out once in a while. If my husband is home, he'll do some yardwork outside or something. The money is always kept inside when the kids are out there - they come inside to make change. :woohoo: Good way for them to get rid of unwanted CDs, games, etc. We check Ebay first to see how much they could get on there, and if it's not much we try the garage sale route. They each get their own table for setting up. This year, I think my daughter will have the most to sell as she is ready to part with things like her littlest pet shop and stuff like that. :cutie:
As for stockpiling - I have never done that. We usually use whatever I buy in bulk, lol. Seven people can use up a lot of toothpaste, soap, etc. and I would not be into buying brands that we
do not use just to resell them. Not enough money to risk that it won't sell to someone at a profit.
Not enough room to store a bunch of stuff either!

I don't have enough stockpile to sell, but don't have a problem in the world with people doing it?

It being illegal to sell stockpiled things? hahahahahhahaha...no difference between that and people selling clothes that bought and no longer need/want

I don't go to many garage sales but have had a few. I wouldn't do it again unless I was moving and getting rid of a lot of stuff. I am not a saver so I like to get rid of stuff as I clean out a room. I usually donate my stuff on freecycle but have sold a few things on craigslist.

I have only been to one garage sale that had tons of sunglasses. Never seen toothpaste, etc. Not sure if I would buy them. When I have a stockpile I usually donate it.

I'm not sure if stockpiling on a small scale is worth the time and effort. I had slacked off and only did a bit this year. So is $500 worth it after factoring in time and gas and the cost of two newspapers? probably not but I put that money straight into my Roth IRA after every sale to use for college. It makes me save, gives me something to do with the freebie items I accumulate and I have to drive by numerous drugstores for work. To really make money, I think you'd have to be a super couponer and have access to a store that doubles.

In terms of stockpiling for your own family's use, I'd like to try harder this year. I don't do much food couponing and I should. What good is a $500 garage sale if you're not saving on food every week, kwim? I'm good about only buying what's on sale, at least
