I don't know what the difference is in a Sericel, Serigraph, Lithograph, Cell etc.......

I bought a few signed sketches from Disney in September and loved them so started searching around the internet. I've been emailed with some pictures of some things that a person has for sale.

Well I went to ebay trying to value them as the person (who I don't know but has good feedback) told me to make an offer on.

Well everything looks the same!!!! The $5 ones look the same as the $1,000 in some cases. I have only been able to find one of the things he has and it's valued around $100 dollars. I just don't know where to go to research these if I can't find them on ebay. I don't want to make to low or high an offer but if I ask him for a price then I don't know whats fair and what isn't.

Does anyone know of a websight that lists things like this? A database of Disney Art?

Some basics, from least expensive and most common, to most expensive and less common:

The lithograph is (usually) printed in large runs. They are not hand inked (at least the Disney lithos aren't) and as such, are pretty much identical from print to print. Typically, they're printed on flat mediums in a similar manner to magazines. That said, I have an Emperor's New Groove litho that had a run of 500-it probably was done via serigraphy, but called a litho.

The serigraph is created by using a silkscreen to force ink onto paper, using a squeegee. Different areas are blocked to prevent unwanted from coming through (I did a lot of this in a college art class).

The sericel uses serigraphy, but the ink is forced onto celluloid, rather than paper.

Disney also has hand inked sericels, which are far more expensive than the once created with serigraphy. This is due to the more time consuming nature of creating them.

No, I'm not an expert on them, by any stretch of the imagination. I just love my Disney artwork. I'm pretty sure there's someone around here that can give a more detailed explanation

Thank you so much! I'm guessing though that there is no way to tell just by looking at a picture what they are. Here are a few pictures of the one this person has for sale.

I just sent you a PM JadenLayne!

seems like lots of ebay auctions for "sericels" that are nothing more than the lithos the disney store gave as premiums when you bought VHS/DVDs...rip offs.

Even the post office has stamp sets/lithos for around $20, not too shabby.

Anything limited edition/signed is more "valuable". There are also runs of items on canvas for better color quality.

You can also find vintage cells out there that are the real deal.

Usually if it are more expensive ones, they come with certifications of authenticity (COA) and/ or have printed on the back of the frame WHAT exactly it is.

The more expensive ones are usually always limited editions (LE), and thus have somewhere a number on them. The seller should be able to provide you pictures of that.

Bumping to see if anyone is familiar with any of these.

I can't really tell from any of the pictures you posted.

The Donald Duck fireman looks like a sketch done by a Disney Artist along with a sericel.

The multi character one looks like a lithograph.

The 101 Dalmations appears to be a sericel, but I can't tell without seeing a closer view. The sericels generally have a logo in the right bottom corner that says Disney and the edition size in circular print around it, at least for sericels from the 1990's. Newer sericels have the Art of Disney logo in the lower right corner.

Disney also used to do hand inked cels in limited numbers that were based on actual scenes from the films.

I can't tell what the Sleeping Beauty one is from the photo. That could actually be a production cel with another backround inserted, but I can't tell for sure without a closer look.

Any of these should have a Certificate of Authenticity with them except for a lithograph. Those generally state the edition size on the print somewhere.

If there is a local gallery that sells animation art, you might want to check with them. That was how we learned about it before we started buying. We now have lithos, sericels, limited edition hand inked and production cels.

Good luck!

At first, the 101 Dalmations one looked like a sericel, but I recall getting seeing that before at MIL's. That would mean it's a litho. (We're the ones who collect sericels)

I'll do some digging and see if I come up with some sites for you...

Hopefully someone has one or will recognize some of them and can give me any idea of their value.

If you just want pictures check out www.allposters.com or www.art.com, they often have sales and you can get some nice prints. They aren't usually limited edition but it is a reliable source of nice artwork. I've found some of the same prints there that are offered at the Art Of Disney stores. I just frame it myself and can match it to the area / room that I want. I like different artists some of my favorites are David Doss & Peter Ellenshaw. An original print of some of these is very expensive but the reproductions aren't bad.

I've collected the lithographs offered with the DVD / Videos purchase for years and have 50+ of those. I've also picked up a few prints on sale or at the outlets in Orlando.

Beth,

The "Magic of Disney Animation" and "Where Magic Lives" are definitely art prints that were done at WDW by on of the animators. The "Magic of Disney Animation" ones are retired prints and can become quite valuable. DH has one from his very first WDW trip and we've been told it could put both kids through college! eek!

The stitch is possibly a similar one-the animators will do specific sketches of the characters-nice matting on that one. I'd buy it, it's very nice.

The first alice is a litho, the second appears to be a sericel-see how Alice seems to be levitating over the background? Sometimes, a plain character sericel is placed over a lithograph background. More stuff to confuse you!

The Thanksgiving one is also a lithograph.

Notice the 'Disney' at the bottom right of the Pluto print and the Goofy with balloons print?-that's usually found on the older sericels.

I'm kicking myself that I never saved my old bookmarks before the hard drive crash last year. There was this great art dealer website that literally showed thousands of lithographs.

The thing to look for when purchasing these, as a PP mentioned, is the Certificate of Authenticity. Without it, then the odds are great that the item was a litho.

Was there something in particular you were hoping to find? Did you want to 'invest' in sericels. I quote it because just about everyone I know that owns them has emotional investments in them, regardless of whether they increase in value. :teeth: Heck, I could tell you the stories behind the ones I've purchased, DH does the same, lol.

Suzanne

Thank you Suzanne!!!!
No I just love Disney and am looking into ways to invest in what I like. I'm not concerned with the value but of course if they could go up in value thats great too.

I had collected Snowglobes but my husband and teenage son have broken so many of them that I thought art would be a great choice! I ran across this person and he has some things I really like and told me he would make me a good deal on them so I am going to see. I have my favorite characters that I love I just don't get to Disney often enough to be able to look in their galleries. Wish I did!!!!!

If you ever run across any of the art sights that have limited editions please let me know!

Oh and putting your kid's through college, WOW!

Beth,

Yeah, if we SOLD it it'd put them through college. That's not going to happen. :teeth: See, we're both into the Disney stuff.

Artwork is much safer than snowglobes. Although, eventually, one does run out of wall space.

MIL collected every litho from every video/dvd prepurchase. Before moving, she had her hallway in her old house from waist height to ceiling filled with framed lithos. It was quite cool. Alas, the kitties destroyed quite a few of her snowglobes-and time has not been kind to many of them (cloudy, evaporated).

I've been given orders that I can not purchase any more unframed artwork before framing the prints I do have. I have a bunch of attraction posters that will go up in my office soon (along with a coveted kodalith and negative from Tron), so I'll be able to purchase more one of these days.

Suzanne

Wow,

So far the two I love most are the official movie posters from Pirates (I and II). They are both signed by ORLANDO, Johnny, and Keira and the Black Pearl one is signed by Jerry Brockheimer, and Barbosa and about ten more. It cost me about $250 to have them both custom framed but they look awesome!!!! I also have a few framed pin sets hanging in my bedroom and the two artist sketches I got in September, one of Marie by Monica Willis and the other is Cinderella done by Paul Banwer.

I just love them!!!!

I'm think that this one is just one of the posters that is sold at Art of Disney. I used to have that same one before it got water damage. I paid $20 for it unmatted at DTD. Another thing that gives me that idea is that the matting around it doesn't leave much space to show a number or anything.
