to fix a ding in the windshield?

We were on the freeway this afternoon and a rock hit the windshield. Now theres a pea sized crack and some tiny spider veins around it.

I've never had this happen to me, so I don't know how much it costs and does anybody know a good place to fix it. Also, does insurance usually cover it, or would it be too trivial to even bother with insurance?

FYI, I'm in Akron OH, which is about 45 minutes south of Cleveland, OH.

Thanks.:)

That happened to my husband and it depends on your deductible on your insurance. Call your insurance company to tell them about your situation and they will have you go to a shop to get the window estimated. The company will contact your insurance company and you can find out how much you will have to pay from your pocket, and how much the insurance company will cover for you.
We had to pay $200 or $250 to get ours fixed.

Or, I got a windshield from a junk yard for $50.

or if you live in Massachusetts windshield replacement is free...
they have some new methods where they can fix dings like that and it is a lot cheaper than a new windsheild

It could depend on your state laws. Here in MA, it is considered a safety issue and it is fixed for free as long as you have it done by a glass company that your insurance company recommends. I just had mine replaced a couple of months ago.

We just had this done last week. We had more than a ding, but this kind of circular crack. Anyway, DH called insurance co. and they put us in contact with a glass company. When he called them, they said that sometimes they can repair the glass without replacing it, and that would not cost us anything. If they did have to replace the windshield, then we would have to pay our deductible.

Unfortunately, they could not repair our glass so we did have to pay, our deductible is $250. The whole thing was about $500.

Well, I'm calling the insurance company tomorrow. I'm leasing this car, does that make a difference? It's a 2002 Ford Windstar, and our lease ends in December of this year! Crud... what a time to have this happen.

I hope they can fix it without replacing the whole thing. My deductible is 500, which means it wouldn't be worth it to even claim it.

Bummer:(

I had that happen last year....called my insurance company (USAA) and they told me which glass company to use here in my on town.....they did all the paperwork ....there was no cost to me at all for the repair (no deductible). They have glass repair techniques now on those chips with the little spider veins before they spread and become full-fledged cracks. I guess the laws must be similar to in neighboring Massachusetts (which is where my ding happened...Rt 3 construction just over the border  ) The repair is cheaper than a replacement windshield for the ins co!!

Pretty normal nowadays. I had one fixed some years back like that. You could not tell is was fixed.

We had a ding. Called the insurance co., they sent someone out to our house, they repaired in the garage and it didn't cost us anything. We were in Akron Ohio at the time. Good luck

We have something on our car insurance called "full glass coverage" which means they will replace any of the glass with no deductible. I guess every state is different

Actually, it's a USAA thing, I think! One of the many conveniences of USAA...boy do I love them :) But they do stop covering it if you file a claim for it too many times....be careful.

SC also has the "free" replacement of damaged windshields.

FYI...in some areas, it's only free if it impairs the field of vision of the driver. I currently have a ding in the passenger side, low down. It never gets in my field of vision, so I haven't bothered to attend to it. If it starts to spread, however, I'll get it done right away.
