Definitely go to tirerack.com. You can put in your year, make, and model of your car and it will show you what tires are available for your car, give you reviews, etc. Looking at tirerack's price will also give you an idea if you are being overcharged. Also look around for some other tire review sites on the internet. I would say pick a few of the tires with higher ratings from tire rack and any other website you find and then go to the tire manufacturer's websites. The manufacturer's websites will show you who in your town carries the tires. You will want to call around to those places and see who has them in stock and who is going to give you the lowest price (watch for hidden fees-- we found one that there was at least one place where the price for the tire, did not include actually putting it on your car...you had to pay a separate fee for that). I just looked at the FR710 on tire rack and it had a 7.4 overall rating- not great, not horrible. In addition to the overall rating, you can click on "reviews" and read reviews of people who have the tires on their car.
Just remember that not all tires are created equal. The tire will make a big difference in how your car rides, noise you hear etc.
We just went though this over the past few days. DH just got 4 new tires today. We did go with Discount Tire Company. With the rebates they had going and the prices of the tires there, we got the same tires, installed, with warranty etc. for $300 less than Big O was going to charge us. I couldn't believe the difference in price. We checked a few places and for the tires we wanted, Discount was the cheapest in town that had them in stock (we checked Sears,
Walmart and another local place). Again, be sure when you get the price quoted you make sure all the fees are added in- the tires, putting them on the car, balancing them etc.
