Does Any One Elses Family Think They Are Nuts??

Thru the years, I've had to suppress my enthusiasm for WDW vacations with family and co-workers so they didn't think I was too nuts!:jester:
I was so glad to find the DIS/fellow Disney fans. My first WDW vacation was at age 22! & I didn't realize how hooked I was. You know you're losing people when they have that "deer-in-the headlights"/trapped look. They don't get it/have no interest in WDW. Thats OK...to each his own. Some of their ideas of fun didn't appeal to me either.:p
DH took his first WDW vacation with me in 1993 and I got him hooked. We were married in 1996 and planned on having a family & were fortunate enough to have 3 kids. Where better to go for memorable family vacations?
We finally took the DVC plunge in 2001. As many have posted on this board, I wish we had done it sooner!

My mother-in-law just couldn't understand the DVC concept and gave us a lot of grief about spending the money but when I finally explained it to her in terms of a forced savings account for vacations she seemed to start to understand...

Now she wants us to take them on one of the cruises, my how times change...

I too am a Disney nut, have been going every year since I would walk and will be going every year even after I can't walk anymore--yea ECV's!! Anyway, we went on 3 trips to WDW last year and all my co-workers think I'm out of my mind, but hey it's my vacation and if I want to spend it at WDW then so be it! I think some of them are jealous! Glad to see there are many others out there who are Disney-aholics too!

My family are mostly Disneyholics to some degree, although closested about it (I just found out my dad and stepmom have been going at least once a year for the past 5yrs or so) so I don't get any grief there.

At Job 1 (computer tech for local bank) they just laugh at me, mainly cuz they know about job 2 (CM at Disney Store). They tell me I'm addicted and all I can do is agree w/ them. They also all come to me if they have any questions about WDW. I've been asked so much I've got spreadsheets and price break downs on stuff that I just send out whenever I get a question. I of course don't mind, I get almost as much enjoyment out of planning someone elses trip as I do as going myself. When they found out I bought into DVC, they just shock their heads and now just ask me, "So when's your next trip," and then laugh a good natured laugh when I tell them the exact number of days until I leave.

At Job 2 (The Disney Store) we all plan our next trip to the world as soon as we get back so from their the only questions where why'd I join DVC? Now you think this is tough to explain to the average person, try explaining it to someone who already gets discount when they go. The response I thought was funny was from one of our newer CM's who'd only been w/ us for about a year.

When I told her she responded with "You got suckered into THAT?"

I simply turned to her and reconfirmed what I already knew "You've gone to Disney at least once a year every year for the past 20+ yrs right? And you only stay at the Yacht Club?"

She of course answered "Yes, so?"

Knowing exactly how much she's been paying for her room, I just had to turn away and laugh as I can't even imagine all the money she could have saved as a DVC'er.

Now that I've explained it to her, she is kicking herself, but still refuses to join - but they say I'm the crazy one!! :jester: :smooth:

Yes, we hear it all the time from many family members. We explained that along with Orlando we have taken many other trips- at least one other destination every year- but that doesn't seem to curb it. And the most vehement comments come from the ones who haven't been there; or at least haven't been there since the 80's. They think WDW is Cinderella's Castle and a few hotel rooms.

Hey, if they don't know what they're missing, that's more room there for the rest of us!

After 11 years of the DVC I really do not want or need to go to the parks as much as I used to. Unfortunately, I now use OKW as my snowbird winter home. I also have learned to use the Concierge Collection. Ends up that I still need to keep buying more and more points even though I'm a little Disneyed out!

Co-workers just give you that rolleyeyes look:rolleyes:, but the vacation schedule hangs on the wall and I know what I'll be doing through December, 2004. Others just sign up for time off and never get around to making plans to go anywhere. Or they fritter their vacation days away one at a time. I save all my vacation and personal days for DVC trips. I also plan trips over a holiday to extend them.

When people say Disney again?? I just say nope, Hilton Head.;)

the best thing about this board is that I FINALLY have people who truly understand the obsession.

My children are teens now, and they were the ones who supported the choice to buy at VWL. They think it's a great idea. And it's one of the few places where not only do they feel comfortable going and doing their thing, but I feel comfortable letting them. I cannot imagine going to Las Vegas.

Yeah, my BIL thinks we're crazy - and when both families went on a 7 Day Land and Sea this past February, he admitted we might know a good thing. My sister wants to buy in herself, and figures they would need at least 240 points.

I have made a convert!!!

As for the people at work, they just laugh at me now. I've been 4 times in the last 4 years, and every time it's different and yet the same. Every time I feel relaxed and yet there's always something to do. We've developed traditions even (the Akerhus on the first night - gotta paint a troll).

I say, us Disney Nuts are the only sane people around.

Ps. Did I mention I live in a resort community, and I STILL choose to go to Disney?

We always get that look from my in-laws.....where you can tell that they think we are nuts. And make the comments about how they like to go "different" places all the time. Well, so do we. We take one vacation a year that is NOT Disney related...and one or two a year that is Disney related....so in my opinion, they are just jealous! Also, when i start to think that maybe something IS wrong with me, I quick run and jump onto these boards and once again feel comfortable with my Disney-disease. My sister told me that she thinks that I belong to a cult...LOL!!!!!
Oh well, like someone else has said......if they don't understand to begin with...there is no explanation.
I love this board for making me realize that we Disney people are very special!!!!!!
