Does a garment bag count as a carryon?

It has been forever since I’ve had to travel with dress clothes. Regardless of the length of our trips, we never check luggage, always making sure we can do laundry midway.

We have an out of state wedding coming up and will have to travel with 2 suits and 2 dresses, plus shoes, etc and regular clothes.

Back a million years ago, you could hang your garment bag in a spot as soon as you entered the plane. What do you do with it know? Throw it in the overhead?

I’m half tempted to just put the clothes in our carryons (thankfully we’re short, so things should actually fit).

Any tips?

I'd put it in the carry-on. Right now, SW lets you take a carry-on that fits in the overhead bin and then a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you. I got stopped last time because I had my carry-on, my backpack, and my purse. Purse had to go IN the backpack or the carry-on, couldn't just sling it over my shoulder (and it's a little one, basically a vera bradley wallet with a shoulder strap).

Depends on the airline and if it meets that airlines size requirements for carry on bags.

At this point, I don’t even have a garment bag! I just hate the idea of tossing it in the overhead (assuming it would fit). Just seems like everything will be a wrinkled mess, falling off hangers, etc. It made much more sense to use one when you could actually hang it up.

You're not going to be able to hang it up.

Pack in a carry on bag like a duffel or small suitcase and bring a travel steamer or hang in the bathroom and turn on the shower.

Just recently flew. It was announced that it’s 2 items only. 1 being your carry-on bag and only 1 personal item - purse, laptop, neck pillow, over the ears headphones, etc. They were very adamant and firm on the 1 personal item only. Asked passengers to condense to meet the requirements.

I would put clothes in the carry-on bag. Then iron if needed.

We actually bought a garment bag that zips up into a duffel bag last year when we traveled to Orlando for a formal event. The only drawback was that it doesn’t have wheels, just a carrying strap.

Yes, a garment bag counts as a carryon and must fit into the overhead or under your seat. If there is a closet at the entrance it will be for the FA's to use.
