Does 10yo need passport?

They aren't flying though. They are driving into the US where a passport is not required to cross *then* getting on a US *domestic* flight.

Thanks very much! I don't know how I could have said it more clearly, so I'm confused why so many people seem not to be grasping the situation.

Our friends called Southwest to confirm per TSA direction. It was confirmed - AGAIN - that no passport is required and we are all set to travel next week.

I 100% understood what they are doing - I would not do it though - I would not take another persons child into another country unless that kid had a passport - maybe it's not required but I would not feel comfortable. But the OP is not asking that - and I guess while some of us are maybe asking ourselves how would we handle it - they are not asking for our opinions but what is the is the minimum requirement, so that is fair.

But I am the OP, and I've also stated more than once that we are going all together - including the 10 year old's parents.

my only thoughts are what if you have to fly back to home and going to whatever US airport you have your car at is not an option
I am trying to think of a situation that would make us need to fly home to any airport other than DTW and can't think of any. It's not possible to fly from MCO into our hometown, so either we would need to fly MCO to YYZ (which would be a headache for a million other reasons than the lack of passport) or we would fly to FNT or GRR and from there make our way to our cars at DTW. Either of those scenarios would still be faster than flying into YYZ. It would be faster for us to fly into Ohio and make our way back home than it would be to fly to Toronto, even though we live in Canada.

Then as my DD would say to the young girl's parents - 'that sounds like a you problem' - but it is very kind of you to try to find the answer for them.

This is wrong. ANY child of ANY age, flying internationally, MUST have a Nexus card or passport, straight from the US government website: "All Canadian Citizens entering the United States by AIR are required to present a valid passport, or a NEXUS card when departing from a designated Canadian airport."

So just because a couple people have gotten lucky and gotten kids across by air without a passport, does NOT mean you should plan on it. Trying to get a child across without proper identification is irresponsible.

The OP is NOT flying internationally. They are driving across the US border, and then on a domestic flight. Maybe the only irresponsible thing is not reading the whole thread -- LOL !

This is so wrong!!! They have made some considerations for driving across the border, but flying you MUST have a passport. Also it has just come out that some state to state now needs a passport. So if the USA is making its own people have passports to fly domestic, you can bet foreigners, yes that is us, will need them to fly.

The thread was not about flying internationally, but flying domestically within the USA. My comment about not needing a passport to fly remains correct, when you view in the context of the thread.

Also, the comment on some "state to state now needs a passport" is not entirely correct. The drivers licenses is some US states (4) are not compliant with current federal security standards, and people in those states may need to show ID that is compliant (of which, a federal passport meets the requirement). People in those states can also use military ID's, border cards (such as NEXUS. Global Entry), or enhanced drivers licenses (some of those same states also issue enhanced licenses which meet requirements).

I have flown many times on a USA domestic flight, and have not had to show a passport at security (my Ontario drivers license was acceptable).
