Am I reading the cruise website correctly that the only documentation I need to provide for my 5 year old is a copy of his birth certificate if we are traveling round trip from San Diego? Do I not need to get him a passport?

If you are on a closed-loop cruise from a US port (meaning it departs and returns to the same port), then he does not *need* a passport. However...as you will be leaving the country and anything can happen, it's not a bad idea to have one. Yes, you can get him an emergency one if necessary, but do you really want to deal with that when you're already in a stressful situation?
