Doctor, Dentist, Hospital etc....

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question that has crossed my mind, hope it's not a premonition

We are staying in Kissimmee (Emerald Island) next month and just wondered if the need arose, how we would go about finding the best Dr, hospital or dentist in the area. I know most villas come with a handbook with emergency details in but just wondered if anyone had been unlucky enough to need these services whilst away and how you found them in terms of quality of service??

we have also stayed in kissimmee and have used the doctor services on the i 92. Be warned it is expensive first occasion son had conjuctevitis (eye infection) which in uk you can buy the eve drops over the counter for £5 in the us it cost us $178 for doctors consultation and prescription. Then last feb I had a terrible throat infection and once again it was a similar amount.
I now always take eye drops with me and as we go to spain a lot pick up over the counter antibiotics from spain and take them with me.
The service was very good but it is a case of turn up and wait your turn.
I would recommend that if anyone in your party has medical conditions that are likely to flair up to take medicine with you.

There is a good Doctor's Medical Center which we used last April.
Basically heading down Vineland road past LBV Factory Stores just after you turn right at the main junction, as if going to Premium Outlets, or International Drive south.
There are a few shops there on the corner and a Doctors surgery also.

Wasn't cheap but we were covered by insurance.

Can't advise on Dental care, never needed it.

I contracted Meningitus in 2004 but we were staying in Disney, DH asked at reception about a Doctor and there's a place on site so we had a GP come from there who checked me over then called an ambulance, the ambulance took me to Celebration Hospital which I have to say was fantastic and if I got sick again I would go there.

We paid the GP with travellers cheques and the hospital dealt with my insurance company directly while I was in the hospital, we claimed back the GP cost from the insurance. No problems.

If you are staying at Emerald Island, there is a medical centre really close by at the Formosa Plaza - Centra Care. Have used them for ear infections, but as others have said it is pricey for a consultation. If any of our kids have earache problems now we go to Walgreens and speak to the pharmacist and he recommends some great 'off the shelf' drops which do the trick.

Yeah the Walgreens at the Formosa Gardens Traffic Lights has a clinic there that is good.

There is a Centra Care place between the Marketplace and Subway but I wouldn't recommend it as we went in there a month ago when my Mom fell over and banged her head badly on the pavement. We waited for about 3 hours, even with a big lump on her head you would have thought any kind of head injury would have some sort of priority. No ice pack or anything was offered. It was expensive. The doctor look at my Mom's head and said that a CT scan would be the only thing that would show everything but they don't do that there, we would have to go down to Celebration Hospital. He then said, 'It's up to you, if you're a betting person... You could go home and if you get a headache or feel nauseous later, then you could go and get the CT....!' Yeah we're going to bet on a head injury...! Natasha Richardson's name was mentioned a couple of times!

we also used the visiting service - the doctor comes to you.

I think it's also associated with Centra Care, but i'm not sure.

We got the number from the reception desk (onsite disney resort).

We've used this service several times during several different visits.

i was very impressed by the doctors, who were very highly qualified.

I chose the visiting service not just for convenience, i didn't want us exposed to all the other people in the waiting room of the walk in places.

As for dentist - i wish i had written down the place i went to. It was actually very far away - the only dentist who could take me immediately (i had a terribly painful tooth infection). He was really good and not at all expensive. Plus, he could have done the root canal on the spot (he had a specialist there who could have done it) and made a bundle of money - but instead he gave me antibiotics and suggested that i get the root canal done as soon as i got back home (which is what i did).
He could have cheated me, he could have pushed me to have the root canal there, but he didn't.
So i would most definitely go back to him again, if we had a dental emergency while in orlando.
Too bad i didn't write down his name
But it was very far away, in a very fancy neighborhood, 'somewhere' in the orlando area.
i wonder if i have the name written down on my list from that trip. I should go searching for it.

Sorry to hear of your experiences but again thanks for all the info

Will definately bear Walgreens in mind but here's hoping we won't need to call on them, just thought it was a good idea to have a rough plan if we needed medical help.......
