The Dobies returned yesterday from five nights at the Paradise Pier. Here are some random observations...

The Paradise Pier is fabulous. To start off with, the location is perfect. I am a relatively slow walker, but I timed myself one night when I was returning from the parks and it took me exactly four minutes to walk from the lobby of the Grand Californian to the lobby of the Paradise Pier. The room was huge...two queen size beds, and room for a sofa sleeper. We didn't fold it out, so I don't know how comfy the sofa bed was, but it could not possibly be as comfy as the regular beds, which were amazing. The room had huge windows, which opened a few inches on each side. We had a standard view room with a view of the pool. The only thing we didn't like about the room was the bathroom...although big, the sink was inside the bathroom, there was no fan, and the shower head was about neck level. But the fittings were nice and it was sparkling clean. We had turn down service offered every nite.

The pool is relatively small, and the water was too warm for us. Actually, the pool is the only thing we didn't like about the hotel...we like to spend about ninety minutes or so by the pool each afternoon, but by mid afternoon families had camped out by the pool and there were no chairs available. They also allow smoking fairly close to the pool area, and you have to walk through the smoking section to get to the snack shop/bar, blech. So if poolie afternoons are important to you, you might want to stay at the DLH or Grand. The slide was really fun, and the water was colder than the pool.

Check in was efficient and friendly, and because we were celebrating our anniversary (a very big number, might I say) the hotel decorated one of the beds with rose petals. They also sent up a plate with two enormouse mickey mouse crispie treats.

We had room service dinner the day we arrived because we were too pooped to go out. The menu was short, but the burgers were good. They bring it up on a tray and there is a table that they slide from under the desk and set for you.

The parks, of course, were busy. We saved our resort hotel fastpasses for Star Tours but didn't care for the ride..too bumpy for us old geezers. Soarin' is lookin' kinda ragged...maybe they are waiting to refurbish the film until they replace it in 2013, but it could really use a clean up. Plus the right side was down frequently.

WOC was lovely. Since the Dobies are tall, we were able to stroll into the blue section 15 minutes before showtime and get a great viewing spot...just behind some short people at a railing.

As usual, the Fantasmic Dessert Seating was a highlight of our trip. We lined up 30 minutes before the kiosk opened and scored second row seats in the middle. We had a perfect view of the fireworks afterward, and even saw Tinkerbell fly!

Speaking of a perfect view of the fireworks, watching them from the roof of the PP was amazing. We showed up two minutes before they started, grabbed a chair from the pool area, and had an amazing view. They piped the music in.

I agree with all the other posters that the Celebration parade is wonderful. I loved the Mary Poppins bit... one of my earliest memories is of my mom taking me to that movie when I was 3...we watched it twice. We also watched Alladin twice.

The new Paradise Gardens dining area is fantastic. We had skewers there twice...I strongly recommend the steak ones, and unless you like your meat swimming in sauce, order it on the side. The portions are huge, and if you are not starving, two people can easily share. There was a great Irish band called Sligo Rags playing...a great place to sit in the shade with a couple of beers and relax.

Because we didn't like Star Tours and Mr. Dobie doesn't do coasters, we avoided Tomorrowland except for Buzz. Friday morning, before we left, we hit Buzz at opening, rode six times as walk ons while everyone else was doing their Space/Star Tours things, then ran ahead of the crowds to NOS, walked on Pirates and Mansion, rode the train to TT for one last walk on visit to Small World, rode a bus down Mainstreet, used our last resort FP on Soarin', and were sippin' mimosas at La Brea Bakery at 11:00 before we had to leave for the airport.

All in all, a fantastic trip!

Glad to hear you had so much fun :goodvibes

Our favorite part of staying at PPH is the view of the fireworks from the rooftop :thumbsup2

Sounds like a great trip! My brother and I usually do Buzz at least 30 times the whole trip (6-7 times a morning for 5 mornings, it's not even 8am and we've conquered the high score list!), so we're definitely thinkin' the same way riding Buzz multiple times in the morning. And aren't those mimosas good! Mmmmmmm yes. :cool2:

Would you say that the Fantasmic Dessert Package is worth it? I cry my face off every time I see the show and we go once a year, but we've never had decent seats, my brother and I always stand on the stones by our secret Fantasmic tree, it's an angled view but still quite obstructed.

Sounds fun! We'll have to try to dessert seating next time. We've never done it before. I wish they had that for WOC!

We did the same thing with Buzz in the morning. We were used to grabbing lots of Buzz FPs once the other FP rides got too late and mostly walking on with them in the afternoon and evening. Now that we can't do that we found a new pattern. Get ST FP first thing. Then ride Buzz several times in a row walking on before it got a line. I just can't bring myself to wait 20-30 in line for it.

I'm so glad to hear you loved the PPH! I know you were really curious about it (especially after having stayed at the GCH) and weren't sure what to expect. Yay!

I love the PPH too - I kind of used to think of it as the place I would stay if I couldn't stay at one of 'the other two' DLR hotels...a last resort, I guess you could say. But PPH has grown on me - I know for a fact that I like the size of the PPH rooms much better than the size of the GCH rooms - and now it's no longer a last resort to me. That's not to say that I wouldn't stay at GCH or DLH if I suddenly got an amazing deal, but I am perfectly happy at PPH.

Two things struck me as particularly interesting in reading your review, Dobie:

1. You specifically mentioned the room service hamburger being good (which, of course, comes from the PCH Grill downstairs). The funny thing is, I ordered room service at PPH for the first time ever this past December and my burger was not great at all.:rotfl2: It was thin and dry (and way too expensive!). The guy who brought my food was delightful (was his name Louie? Can't recall) - and the Kilauea Molten Apple Pie was delicious!:yay: But my burger could have been better. I am holding out hope that the next time I order room service, the burger will be better - and I will order again, because I want that Kilauea Molten pie thingy!; and

2. It's so interesting to watch the tides kind of turn here on the DIS, in terms of reviews of DLR hotels, restaurants, etc. In one month, you might see several threads pop up with all the negative PPH reviews, all the negative Goofy's Kitchen reviews, all the negative Cafe Orleans reviews, whatever. And then, literally, one month later, all of the pro-PPH, pro-Goofy's Kitche, pro-Cafe Orleans, etc., reviews/threads pop up. That's what's been happening with the PPH lately - one great review after another, in quick succession. But it wasn't always like that. Check back one or two months from now and we'll see if PPH is still getting raves!:rotfl2:

After reading all the great PPH reviews this summer I really wanna book it for an upcoming trip. I just feel like I can never justify the cost.

Wow - great review! PPH use to be the ugly stepchild of the DLR hotels and lately, everyone has been posting awesome reviews!! I can't wait to try it out next month!

Dobie, Dobie, Dobie...now you are tempting me into adding on 2 nights at the PPH for our late Nov trip. Bad Dobie.

I'm glad you had a wonderful time. :goodvibes Please tell me more about the F! dessert seating. Is it worth it for the 5 of us? Is it $$$?

I'm one of those short/petite rail hugging WoC watchers.

Do you have any photos to share? :flower3:

I was wondering when you would be back. Glad you had a great trip.

Jack

After reading all the great PPH reviews this summer I really wanna book it for an upcoming trip. I just feel like I can never justify the cost.

You know what is funny? I sort of think the opposite. We recently went and stayed off property, and for me--I can't really justify the time and effort it takes to get to disneyland and NOT stay at one of their hotels. We have stayed off property 4 times now, but I am always left feeling like I should have just gone for it. Mostly because it takes a big effort for us to get there. This last trip it was a 7 hour drive (with one stop for lunch) and that is a big deal to me! Especially when I am the one driving and I am not just a passenger napping and watching movies on my laptop! Ha. If my husband drives, it isn't such a big deal, but it still feels like forever. So for all that effort, I don't want to short change us on the hotel experience. Especially since everything is expensive at Disneyland--from the food, to tickets--so why pick the hotel to go cheap for?

But that doesn't mean I will just throw down a ton of money and pay their regular rates. Last summer we stayed at Disneyland Hotel for 195.00 per night (thru Expedia), last April we stayed there for 215.00 per night (thru Orbitz) and this summer I got the GC for 30% off (early summer sale). To me, if I can get a great deal it is worth the experience of staying on property.

I have been feeling the Paradise Pier love here too (it is catching!), and when we got home from our latest trip I cancelled our reservations at Hojos and made them for Paradise Pier for our October trip--we are doing Mickey's Halloween Party for the very first time, and are very excited! I paid for a upper theme park view, because I love a good view. The rate was an AP rate and not that great (only 20% off), but I plan on calling the minute they release their fall promotional rates (typically 30% off) and readjusting it. My mom was the queen of getting a discount, and I think she left that to me.

I wish our drive was only seven hours, we make that drive(6-7 hrs time wise) once a month to the Oregon coast.(skip winter) Ours is about 18-20 , but we can only get away once a year to hit DLR so we choose the GCH. We love deals but we never short ourselves on what we want to do or where we like to stay

Right now we are in Redding, about half way there. Back on the road at 0600 tomorrow should be in Anaheim about 1600 tomorrow if traffic not to bad.

Have a great trip, Jack! I can't wait to read your update. :)

I would say it is definately worth it. It is worth it just to have a comfortable seat to see the show, and the fireworks afterward, especially after coping with crowds all day.

The treats are just a bonus. They lasted us three nights for dessert, and we had the crackers, cheese, and fruit for breakfast the next morning.

I don't have any photos to share because I didn't get any good ones. My good camera is too freaking heavy to lug around all day and Dobie Brat dropped my point and shoot in Japan and scratched the lens. :sad2:

Ok, Fantasmic Dessert Seating. Basically, you line up before the show starts...we lined up at 7:30 both last summer and this summer and there were about 12 parties ahead of us each time. They start letting you pick seats at 8:00. Both times, we had a choice of first row on the extreme left and second row right in the middle. This summer we chose second row in the middle..we were directly in front of where Mickey stands. We came back at 8:30ish, were immediately seated, and given our dessert box. There were 3 of those round baby bel cheeses, a piece of Tillamook cheddar, a piece of Tillamook monterey jack, two three-packs of water crackers, a cluster of grapes, a mini cheesecake, a mini lemon tart, a piece of chocolate decadence, an amazing, huge sugar cookie filled with berry jam and dipped in white chocolate, the most incredible, fresh, soft macaroon I have ever tasted, and a white chocolate truffle and a milk chocolate truffle. When they seat you, they offer you coffee, tea, soda, or hot chocolate. The soda is in a can and is ice cold, with a straw. The hot chocolate is in a 12 ounce paper cup with a lid. They offer you another drink just before the show and again just before the fireworks. The CMs are right there in case you need anything. It is such a nice break, especially being right there in the middle of the action.

The view is incredible from the middle...you can see everything. It is not so good from the wings. After the show, you can see all of the fireworks, but obviously not the castle projections. We saw Tinkerbell this year from the center, but last year in the wing there was a tree blocking. It is so close that you can feel the flames.

The seating costs $60 each. Given how much it costs the Dobies to fly down and stay onsite, we hardly notice 2-3 tickets...especially since we don't do WOC meals or BB. We would probably notice 5-6 tickets...but we are poor! :lmao:

I remembered something you said about the PP being so close...and thought it was so close to the Grand that I am going to name it "The Annex." :rotfl:
