It is law here in CA, and mine wear them because it's the right and safe thing to do :thumbsup2 Scooters too... and then of course when my son races his go-kart  it of course is required when he is racing, as is a chest protector & neck gear, now if I could get him to wear those thing all the time we'd be set for life ;)

I know I probably shouldn't post because I don't have kids, but when I do have kids, they will absolutely be wearing a helmet. They save lives, why wouldn't you do it? Also, in case anyone didn't know, you should replace the helmet after a hit to the head. The force of the impact, when it's saving your head, actually causes the helmet to become ineffective. So if G-d forbid something happens and your kid falls over and lands on their head, get a new helmet even if their current helmet looks fine on the outside, it may not be fine on the inside and may not protect against another fall.

If just cruising around no, if doing something dangerous yes. You can fall walking down the stairs or running around and hit your head and get brain damage.

I'm in my 30s and I wear a bike helmet.

Why take unnecessary chances that you don't have to? I mean, you HAVE to walk down the stairs, and you HAVE to walk across that slippery wood floor to get to the bathroom or whatever... but really, a helmet is a small price to pay for keeping your noggin and your kids' noggins in one piece.

Abso-stinkin-LUTELY my kid wears a helmet. :thumbsup2

DGD (now 10) has always worn one - as do her parents when they ride with her.. No helmets? No bike riding..

Buy a one story house and use another towel to dry the floor while you crawl across it to dry it. Safety first.

Pretty sure that a one-story house is going to be a little more pricey than a helmet. It's silly not to wear a helmet when they're a cheap way to possibly save your life. You can't generalize like that when it comes to something like this. If we did, we could text while driving because we have airbags... we could do all kinds of drugs because there's a hospital right 'round the corner in case we OD... I could set my kitchen on fire (which with the way I cook isn't a stretch) because I have a fire extinguisher...

JMHO, of course.

Are you mocking those who make their children wear bike helmets? Seriously????

What's next...make fun of babies who ride in carseats?

I don't think they are going to get hurt on the sidewalk or the driveway

Umm the concrete on the sidewalk and driveway is just as hard as the stuff on the street. :confused3

You can fall and crack your head on a sidewalk or driveway.

I'm so confused by this.

Yes, my DS wears his helmet always.

don't have a false sense of security because it's your driveway and sidewalk. When my brother was young he was riding on the driveway and fell...split the side of his head opened and needed many stitches. (This is going back many years before there were helmets for kids to wear)

We have always made our kids wear them. We tell themit is becasuse we love them and want to keep them safe.

When Ds was around 4, we were at a campground and kids were not wearing helmets. DS told me that their parents must not love them since they didn't have helmets on.:rotfl:

The younger ones do. Always. No matter what. Caught without it = loss of bike or scooter.

The 16 year old is impossible to enforce and does not/will not. He doesn't ride his bike but will not wear one when on his skate, or snow, board.

DH and I do, religiously.

It is a law here but I am seeing an unsettling increase in the amount of people, of all ages, including VERY young children, not wearing them.

Yes, always! My son is the poster child for helmet use. When he was 4, he was riding his bike and decided to run into the porch (about 3 inches high) to see how fast he could stop and went over the handle bars. His head bounced off the porch and and then bounced off the cement driveway. It split his helmet in half. We walked away with 4 broken teeth on the top. That was it. If he had not had the helmet on, he would have had a major head injury.

Those are horrible analogies and do not make sense for trying to prove a helmet should always be worn.

Learn to read. It is quite helpful.

My dd broke her collarbone on the sidewalk. Thankfully, she didn't land on her head.

A couple of years ago my DGD fell on the grass at school during recess and split her head open - requiring stitches and head x-rays to be sure there wasn't any other damage.. If a child can split their head open on grass, I think it's a safe bet that a child could suffer brain damage from smashing their head on a driveway or sidewalk..

The helmets aren't expensive.. Better safe than forever sorry..

Both of mine do, but many of the kids around here don't. I am just waiting for the day when someone makes fun of my kids and then they beg to stop wearing them, I'm not sure how I will handle that.

I don't make mine wear helmets when they are riding their scooters.

Yes, yes, and yes. When they started riding tricycles in the driveway, they got helmets, mainly so they would be used to wearing then when they moved on to bicycles. I never have to make them wear them now - it's just a normal part of riding.

As for walking down the stairs, you aren't going 20mph - or even more- down the stairs, so the force of impact is less. We don't see scads of closed head injuries from stairs.

And just fyi, if your child is injured while riding a bike and not wearing a helmet, the ER staff WILL make fun of you behind your back, and the social worker will have a talk with you. Yes, I'm serious. Is that really what you want? Aside from the risk of your child having permanent brain damage or death...

Our kids always wear helmets- they have had helmets since they were on tricycles and automatically put them on to ride. There is no discussion or argument, they just wear them. Our DS got a new scooter for his 5th birthday and a new helmet came with it. It is just a habit for them to wear helmets.
