My soon to be 8 year old son is so taken with Tomie dePaola and his work, he wants to be just like him. He loves to take out his books from the library and read them over and over again and has recently (after not being interested in art) decided he loves art and wants to be a writer and an illustrator when he grows up. How do your kids feel about his books?

My DD's second grade class spent a lot of time on dePaola books and projects last year. She enjoyed them.

My son was introduced to him on Barney when he was about 2. When he was able to choose books in school he would always pick one of his. Strega Nona was a fave of his, especially because he was so attached to his own Grandmother.

My son notwithstanding, I LOVE Tomie DePaola. LOVE LOVE LOVE his books, his style, everything.

DS likes him too, but the books we have purchased, were as much for ME.

6yo DD enjoys his books and artwork also. They spent some time on Tomie in her class this year. :D

My DD likes Tomie, too, although I must say her favorite is Eric Carle. If your DS is into the art aspect of Tomie de Paola, might I suggest introducing him to the art of Eric Carle, too. The stories are probably a bit young for him at 8 (although they remain favorites of mine ::yes:: ), but learning to make his art can be fascinating!

I saw him on a Mr. Rogers episode once showing how he did it...so neat! There's also on of those crafty-type books (like the Klutz books, but not a Klutz...edited to add oops...I see it IS a Klutz book !) that has some of the printed papers so the kids can make collages like his...

You Can Make a Collage by Eric Carle

And a book about his art, stories, etc.

Thanks for the links, Katie. DS loves Eric Carle books too, although he doesn't read them as much as he used to. I had never seen the two books you linked, will have to check them out when we get to a real book store next month! (Know of a good one you can recommend?);)

Teejay32, maybe it is a second grade thing as DS is just finishing up the 2nd grade. Tonight DS was so excited about Tomie's new website he went to his room for quite a while to write him a letter.

I have no kids but LOVE his books! I discovered them accidently when I was in a local bookstore several years ago. There were several tables of his work and a huge line of kids. I asked what was going on and was told that he would be doing a reading from his latest book in about an hour. So, I picked one up to look at and was hooked. He illustrations are wonderful. He is an amazing person too. He came out and had the kids sit around him as he read. And, you could tell that he was enjoying it as much as the kids. He then autographed the books. My niece and nephew loved the books signed with their names.

I LOVE Tomie! Yes, it is a (usually) second grade thing to do an author study on Tomie dePaola. My mom is a second grade teacher, and I made a special visit home to go with her to a Tomie dePaola book reading and signing. I have watched his videos, read his books, and written papers on him for school (elementary education student, almost done!). He has a unique style of writing and his images are always so perfect! These stories can be enjoyed by children of many ages. There are also a lot of cultural stories and stories with good meaning. Anybody who hasn't checked these out for their kids should definitely take a peak! Go see him in person if you have the chance! He is just as animated as his books come across!
