My oldest son just came home and said "hey mom, why don't we order a pizza" to which I said "great, you buy I'll fly".

The child looked at me like I asked him to short sheet the Pope. :rolleyes1

I'm amazed how he is still willing to spend my dough but will try to weasle out of reaching in his pocket.

Then no pizza for him. Order one with gooey extra cheese so he can see it stretch!

Yep, sounds like my kids! ;)

Nope I don't have that problem and it sometimes worries me. Of course my kids are still preteens and teens but when they ask for some kind of junk food I say ok you buy. They run up to their piggy banks to get their money. Then I say no you're not buying that junk nor are we eating it. But they have no problem spending their own money.

My favorite new saying to DD is you need a Job!

Of course even if she had a job she would rather spend my money.

This weekend we were at Target and she saw some of the 17.00 scooters left and wanted one. I told her no she had a scooter at home she doesn't use. Of course she had the excuse that it was a Bratz scooter and she was too old to be using a kids one. I told her fine, she could use the gift card she still had from her bday...............of course she put it back with a quickness, Lol :rotfl:

DD16 yesterday asked me to take her to Old Navy to buy some shirts she had seen online. I assumed she was buying with her money. As soon as I saw she had several items with her I asked " Did you bring enough money?" Of course she replied.."Mom, I thought you were buying":rotfl: The pile of clothing she had quickly became 3 items:laughing: She doesn't like to spend her $$!!

My DS12 does! Give him a budget for spending at Boy Scout Summer or Winter Camp and tell him he can keep what he doesn't spend...well, he just doesn't spend. Gave him a budget on our trip to Florida this year, he refused to spend any of it for souvenirs. He chose to save it for stuff he really wants. The other two are too young to care and just want to spend their money as soon as they get it...

Yep-it's amazing when DD11 if ssee something she wants and I tell her "you can spend some of your birthday money on it" she'll usually says she'll have to think about it and by the time we leave the store she changes her mind.;)

About a month ago she decided to get the new Taylor Swift album. She thought about it for quite awhile before she decided yes. Then a few weeks ago she mentioned to me that she wanted to return it. I think she was crushed when I told her you can't return an open CD.:rotfl2:

LoL! I think for the most part this is a universal thing! I always gauge how much they really want something by saying, "How much are you going to put towards it?" If they are willing to help pay for it, then I know that they really want it. If they put it back, then I guess it wasn't that important. :goodvibes
Both of my kids are pretty good with money...DS is downright frugal. When he was 4, I gave him and his sister a quarter to ride the carousel at the store. He looked at the quarter and asked, "Do I have to ride?". A little confused, I said, "Not if you don't want to." He asked, "If I don't ride, do I have to give you the quarter back?" :rotfl2:
I let him keep the quarter and he has been that way ever since. He doesn't buy souvenirs on vacation...and only spends on what he wants to buy.

We started giving our 5 year old an allowance so now when we are shopping I can tell her "use your own money"- it is amazing how fast things get put back on the shelf! Once she even bought something, had buyers remorse and returned it on the way out!

Some may not agree with an allowance for a child so young, but honestly it has saved me money in the long run, she is learning how to make a decision if it is something she really wants/needs and there are now less arguments and begging in stores. Oh... and any money she has saved goes to Disney and that ends up being less spending money that I have to give while on vacation!

I look at it this way. He is learning how to be selective in what he spends his money on and probably realizes that his pockets aren't bottomless pits. I think all kids need to learn this. I know my 2 boys have, the girl not so much, but she is better than she was.

I bolded above - What an excellent idea to tell them!

My DD13 wanted Coach shoes and Sperry's, we split the cost. She earns money baby-sitting and little chores around the house. I probably paid more than half.
