Do your children wear costumes @ Disney?

The last time we went (fall 2006) we saw so many adorable princesses all throught WDW. Our son was 3.5 at the time and didn't care about wearing any costume at all. Just curious, espcially families with boys - if your children wear costumes any time there? If so, is it daily - or only for special occasions like the Pirate/Princess party?

We are taking both boys (5 & an infant) to the Pirate/Princess party next week. My oldest doesn't want to wear a costume, but says he'd rather just wear a pirate shirt. I had a friend embroider a cute pirate on a onesie for the baby to wear and we are all set.

I love seeing the kids (young and old) dressed in Disney attire. pirate:

ok here is my opinion on the costumes. there adorable in them but it is hotter then hell in the summer the kids are cranky and stuffy the costumes are hard for them to walk in etc .. why do you want to do that to them if they dont want to ( not saying your like that by any means)i saw one poor princess dressed up as belle last year full make up, hair and georgious dress.. mom was having a hissy because the girls hair kept falling and she got her dress stained the girl sat there crying and she kept saying but Mom i TOLD you i didnt want to wear this anyways.. i felt bad for all involved. My suggestion is get him maybe a patch for his eye and tie a bandana around his head.. fun for him and not hot and stuffy plus if you get stuck carrying it.. not a big deal. maybe ever get you a perk on POTC ride if he is into it ?? remember Florida is Hot been in the 80s here already and it is not even May yet , also been raining . My other suggestion is if you dont have one get a cover for the stroller from toys r us ( under $20 ) its been a life saver for me many times over. Hope this helps, i usualy go with the flow with my kids and we have 5 of them !!

They are hot to wear so your pirate shirt is a perfect idea! We also got hair extensions from walmart with glitter and butterflies to put in our girls hair and that made them feel like princesses. I know you do not have girls, but ours loved wearing little tiaras that I bought from the flower girl section at craft stores in their pony tails. Those are cooler ways to dress up so they are not hot.

I would love to go a trip without a princess costume, but as long as my girls want to wear them, i will bring it. I have tried to talk them out of it this year, but they want to because they see the other kids. I agree that they are hot, but if they want to then they do even for a short time.
My DD's put on their princess costume for BBB. I usually book BBB for the last appointment of the day that way the sun isn't beating down on them. The next morning they also want to put on their costume, but they wear a bathing suit underneath so that when they have had enough, they can take it off and throw shorts on.

YES- IMO it's all part of the fun and magic.

We buy ours a WalMart and I am not having a fit if it gets messy, dirty, ripped, stained, etc- I could really care less- it's a COSTUME. As long as you are flexible about it and don't require your child to look like an "actual" character all made up it can be fun for them. And for petes sake leave the plastic heeled princess shoes at home- kids can't walk 2 feet in them without falling- let alone make it through the park all day in them.

I have been wondering about this. My son will not care about a costume, although a pirate patch sounds like fun and maybe a bandana. Those are easy.

My 4 year old daughter however may or may not be devastated if she is without a costume! It is hard to tell! I am thinking of bringing a costume JUST for the princess breakfast. My other alternative is a princess shirt. I will definitely bring some shorts to put on after the breakfast, but I did think that she would enjoy dressing up for that one meal.

We have a Snow White costume that we got at a garage sale that has never even been worn but she has no interest in snow white. I think that I will get the Cinderella costume from Wal-Mart since that is a princess she knows about. I saw one yesterday and it was only $20.

We spend a lot of times in the parks. My DD LOVES to dress like a princess so I started sewing her cotton dresses. Cooler and washable! When she wore her Mulan, Mulan took her by the hand and posted for pictures. LOL

Our DD4 sometimes chooses to wear her princess dress for the day. But we always bring a change of clothes in case she wants to change - we've always had to use it.

We actually had to take DD on Splash Mountain to get her dress soaked before she would agree to take it off last year. She was dressed like Snow White and was beet red. But she still refused to take it off...until it got wet :)

DD wore a Belle dress & her cousin wore pirate stuff

When we were there last April, my husband and I commented to each other how cute all the little girls looked, but also how hot and uncomforable they must be in those long dresses, hair pulled up tight, and make up and glitter. Plus a lot of them had stockings on which I'm sure was none too comfortable for them.

My DD had the Sleeping Beauty dress for WDW and she finds it more comfortable with stockings as the tulle is itchy.

We don't do costumes, DS isn't interested (even for halloween party) and I feel it is hot for them most of the time. I think it is more or less up to the kids on this one though (and moms of course). If the kid will wear it AND be comfortable AND it is safe I say go for it! I see some little girls running around as happy as can in the costumes. I think it makes it magical for them. Just not our style.

We don't do costumes per say (except for the Halloween party) but I do dress up my daughter in weather appropriate outfits with different characters on them. She seems to like showing the characters who is on her shirt and she looks cute so there ya go! I'm sure there will come a day when she'll want to get the big princess dresses but I'm going to wait until it's her idea, not mine.

My kids ( Boys and girls) like to wear costumes but always bring back-up clothes. Also just about every article of clothing that they bring is Disney related. My oldest Son is quite sad that he is too old to wear costumes anymore:guilty:

We did costumes for our little boys on our recent trip in JAN and they had a blast! We'll do it again in FEB 2009 because they enjoyed it so much. Of course, we went during a time when it wasn't quite so hot.

We put them in Peter Pan costumes one day (the xxs is on sale right now at disney online for $14.99, and it has short sleeves). Another day one wore a Buzz costume and one wore Woody (both also on sale for $12.99 right now). The boys love all of these characters, so they had a great time "playing them" for a day. Also, they had a lot of interaction with other characters(especially at Woody's Round-up in Frontierland) & they enjoyed the extra attention.

Now, if a child doesn't want to dress up in costume, I wouldn't try to force them. During summer months, you'd definitely have to take into account whether the costume would be uncomfortable in the heat. I think the pirate shirt idea is cute! :thumbsup2

My DD loves to play dress-up at home, but IL temps are far different from FL ones. For our upcoming trip, I plan to bring a princess dress for her to wear to the princess breakfast *IF* she wants to wear it. Then, we'll change out of the costume into cool, comfy clothes when we head out to the park. I am fully prepared for her to not be interested in wearing a costume at all, and that's fine too. Whatever makes her happy will make me happy. If I had a son, I'd feel the same way. If he wanted to wear a costume I'd let him, but if not, no big deal.

You might also want to check out this thread on the disboards...it's Creative DISigns where people share different ideas for shirts they've made for their kids/families to wear at WDW. I've used a few of their ideas to make shirts for my boys on past trips. There are still a few ladies in there who will personalize some of their designs to send to you for your use, as well.

Oh, I love your idea. I might copy that. (wearing a swimsuit under it). Hope you don't mind!!
