If you simply check your bank activity on line or otherwise, you have no idea if a check hasn't cleared and is still outstanding. YES, I am "old fashioned", monitoring my checking account very frequently and yes, doing bank reconciliations, book to bank frequently. If I see that a check hasn't cleared the bank, I follow up to find out the reason.
