Do you work in...

I hope you didn't remove the American flag from your desk as requested. If you wish to display it there, you have every right to do so. What's going on here is a form of harassment (to me). It's YOUR personal workspace, and they have no business telling you what you can have there and what you can't.

If you did take it down, I'd put it back, but that's just me. I love a good fight, especially when others are in the wrong!

I agree with the posters that said it appears that many of your coworkers are supporters of free speech ONLY when it coincides with their views!

Good luck! You should not have to put up with this crap.

There is more than one issue here. The first is this totally annoying man. The second is the "culture" of your office, which allows this totally annyoing man to harass people, the third is the "culture" of your office which supports the rights of this totally annoying man to harass people while NOT supporting your right to display a flag or a picture of a soldier.

What to do about it depends on how far "into" it you want to get.

First, you document. You document things he says that make the workplace uncomfortable(I believe the HR word for it is hostile) for you, you document HR's reactions to your complaints, you document, document, document. Then you go to HR, and you tell them that if they allow this type of harassment to continue, you'll have no choice but to sue them. Harassment is not only sexual, and they need to know that. You also look for a new job during all this, because it's only going to get worse. Fanatics toward either extreme (right or left) are still fanatics, and they're going to be out to "get" you once they find out that you are a "whistle-blowing troublemaker" (which is what they consider you for not "following the party line").

Or you sit back, shut up,and take it, or walk away when things get too heated.

Only you can decide how important the job is. I wouldn't want to work in that hostile of an environment personally, but that is me.
