I'm thinking about cancelling cable and phone and just going with the top speed FIoS internet connection. I can watch most of the shows I like (which isn't very many, but I do watch Lost, The Office, etc) online already using my laptop with a 17" monitor.

What is the next step to get the image up on my 42" LCD TV? Are there certain cables that you need to put the video output from the laptop into the TV? What is Slingbox and how does that work?

We're paying $190/mo for TV, web, and land lines - - if I cut back to web only, it would bring us down to $80/mo (this is 50 mbs, the fastest Verizon has for residential in my area). OTOH, if I keep cable, I can drop web speed and get a bundle for $140/mo for phone, web and tv.

If you're watching tv via the web and feeding it to your TV output, please share how you're doing it!!

I use an S-Video cable which you can get for I think less than or about $10. I also have an Audio cable that leads to the headphone connection of my laptop to get the sound. I actually used an iPod cable that you can use to connect to a stereo.

Let me know if you have any questions. I've been doing this successfully to take advantage of my Netflix subscription and I can watch movies on demand on my TV.

To make the sound better, I do change the audio settings on my TV from surround to mono.

Not sure this helps but we bought a Roku to watch netflix movies and shows on our teevee. Super easy and wire-free! We only pay $50/month for cable and internet, which includes pretty fast internet and networks only for cable. Can you see if your cable company has a networks only basic package? Here it runs $10/month

Hi -

What sites do you use to watch web TV on? is there a free movie website?'

Is there an easy way to connect your ipod to the tv?

I'm thinking I don't even need the $10 basic local channels, just a really fast internet connection. Reason being, if I can get my news off Fox.com, my network primetime shows (at least 80% of my faves) off ABC.com or NBC.com, and hulu.com for the rest, I've got 98% of what I need.

I will keep my Blockbuster rental thing going, b/c I'm grandfathered in for 3 movies per month plus two free in-store rentals of a game or movie. This will keep me in movies and shows for my pre-k and elementary aged kids.

Total cost: $80 internet and $15 movies. Not too bad, but I could switch to Redbox too for $1/night.:lmao:
