Do you wash your hands after using the bathroom

Do you wash your hands because

  • it's dirty bussiness

  • some one just decided that's where the sink should go

  • it's a good reminder time

A: because going to the bathroom is dirty bussiness??

B: because ever so long ago when plumbing was introduced that's just kinda where the sinks ended up??

C: because we go enough times a day, it's one of those good reminder times?

I'm sure when there were outhouses it wasn't the norm to always wash your hands after going... So when did it become so popular to do it then??

It's one of those things that has evolved as hygiene and public health became widespread. Kind of like not crapping (and keeping your animals from crapping) near or in your drinking water supply...or not burying the diseased dead near it. Your post makes it sound like you are against it for some reason.:rolleyes1

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS! For at least 30 seconds and a good scrub at that!

Makes me gag that some folks don't!

Wow--can't say anyone's ever asked me to justify washing my hands after I went to the bathroom. Yikes! :scared:

For health and safety reasons.

They used to poke fingers in bullett wounds, too, but now they know better.

not saying it's a bad thing... but like why did it become popular after using the bathroom.

I wash after going every time, but who decided that should be when we wash our hands? some one had to start the trend.

To me using the bathroom doesn't seem quite that dirty as a lot of other things we do in our daily lives. And the fact that there's been news reports on like 20/20 saying that using a keyboard at work is worse than sitting on the toilet. And at least your butt doesn't touch your face like your fingers do.

It wasn't something that peeked my interest. I just wanted to know what others thought.

You're kidding, right?

Don't people ever wonder why?? even if it is the norm??

And I didn't ask if you washed or not... but why do you think it became the norm to do it at that time.

Yes I find it really gross when people don't.
I had some lady yell at me in the bathroom because I was using a hand dryer (the one that blows the air really hard and actually works), instead of using paper towels, because it made too much noise for her. And she walked her daughter out without even going near the sink.

Frankly, no.

This isn't a conditioned reponse, like saying "bless you" after someone sneezes. There's an obvious, practical reason for doing it.

Seriously? It became the norm when public health bacteriologists made the link between human waste and infectious disease.

Ah, but your fingers touch your butt when you use the bathroom! It's not the toilet seat with the germs, it's YOUR seat ;)

I presume it came into vogue about the time it was discovered that diseases are caused by microbes and not evil spirits. It's a public health thing, as someone said - like not pooping in your drinking water. :)

It became the norm after infectious disease experts were able to trace certain conditions to lack of appropriate handwashing after using the restroom. E. Coli in particular has been associated with this behavior. There have been several high profile E. Coli outbreaks that they were able to determine were caused by one employee failing to practice appropriate hand washing procedures- particularly after using the restroom. E. Coli is found in fecal matter.

I suspect someone got tired of eating corn on the cob that tasted crappy.
And I mean that literally.

I carry purell with me. After washing you face the dirtiest part of the bathroom. The door handle. I like the trend of removing the door or doors that open in the direction of exit from bathroom.

Instructions seen in bathroom of hospital.

1. Wash hands
2. dry hands
3. use towels to turn off water and open door.

:worship: It's sort of a waste if you wash and then touch that filthy handle. I ALWAYS use the paper towel. ALWAYS.

Yes I do, and I haven't been sick in over a year and have only had a few minor head colds in the last several years (maybe one a year). I did get barfy sick on Christmas Eve a couple of years ago, but it went away in a few hours. I think it was something I ate.

I remember there was a 20/20 report several years ago where the results showed that 82% of women washed their hands when other women were present in public restrooms, but if they were the only ones in the restroom, they didn't wash afterward. And men? 44% did not wash their hands in public restrooms.
