I just got back from one of my volunteer jobs and I got to wondering how many people on the DIS volunteer. So how about it, do you volunteer and what do you do?
I have been volunteering since I was about 14. Right now I volunteer for Big Sisters, The Animal Shelter, Canadian Cancer Society and our local sheltler/fodd bank.
Volunteering is a part of my life and my childrens lives as well.
I predominantly volunteer for one organization, called Hope Worldwide. I have been doing stuff for them for over ten years.
I have gone to volunteer at the clinic in North Philly our church has, walked around the city, to get kids immunized, handed out free vouchers for medical treatment, got kids signed up for CHIP, helped senior citizens with things, volunteered at my YMCA, etc..
I have been a Girl Scout Leader for NINE years! And contrary to popular belief, we do not get paid. In fact with gas, craft supplies, and covering funds for a less than fortunate scout, it COSTS me a bundle sometimes!
I have been teaching English to adults new to this country for about 5 years, I am one of the chairs of our town's Democratic town committee-I have volunteered more hours than I could ever count on political campaigns , and I help out at DD's GS meetings.
Absolutely! Special Olympics, organizing Game Days at a Youth Protection Home, staffing charity conferences, clothing drives, monthly donations and assistance to a domestic violence shelter, etc. Then there are the charity fundraisers. I enjoy it all very much....
Throughout my life I have volunteered at my kids schools and the PTA, Scouts, sports, YMCA, and church. I adopt a family at Christmas and supply them with Christmas dinner, clothing, personal necessities and gifts. I recently looked into meals with wheels, but you need a reliable car and mine isn't right now...
As my dd gets older, and my health warrants, I hope to give more time to volunteering. It really does feel good to help.
