I just got back from one of my volunteer jobs and I got to wondering how many people on the DIS volunteer. So how about it, do you volunteer and what do you do?

:bounce::wave::bounce:

I was a volunteer firefighter in the late 60's & early 70's and volunteer ambulance service for a while in the late 90's.

School, school, school; library, fundraisers, classroom, testing moniter.
Community Center. A shelter.
Food pantry.

cub scouts,
boy scouts,
school,
district scout camp,
whatever else my DH signs me up for....some days I feel like a full-time volunteer.

When my boys were younger, I did the whole nine yards: cub scouts, classroom mother, PTO/PTA, team mother, parents associations, etc. Right now, I belong to a community service organization that helps the handicapped.

I volunteer once a month at the VA hospital. I do volunteer with DDs school when there are things I can do at home and I volunteer atleast once a year in her class (take a vacation day). I wish I could volunteer a lot more, but with DH and I on opposite shifts it is very difficult since the weekends are our only time away and volunteering during the week would mean getting babysitters.

School council (PTA)
Girl Guides
And a couple of times a year I go and decorate the birthday cakes at one of the senior citizens homes here in town when they have the big party for everyone who had a birthday that month.

I volunteer here!!!!!

I also voulnteer as a room mother at my kid's school. Was a Girl Scout leader til two years ago. I am getting old though and doing less.

Yes. But I don't count DD's school-related stuff or activities because I feel like I have an obligation to be part of my DD's education.

I currently read at an elementary school one day a week (sponsored by our company) and help tutor reading there. DD and I sort and help bag food at a food bank/pantry once a month. I also do the community care day through work and help organize corporate wide food drives and Toys for Tots.

I used to be more active but between working full time and doing stuff at DD's school now, it's hard to find the time.

volunteering during the week would mean getting babysitters

Believe, I began carting DD along to volunteer when she was 2. She loved sorting out the cans at the food bank or helping to serve meals at a women's shelter. Your DDs may enjoy doing it once in a while and it's a good habit to start young.

I've done a number of volunteer jobs and organized projects over the years. Here are a few of the things I've worked on:

MDA Telethon (phones and mail) - since the '80's
painted rooms and cleaned a yard at a Woman's shelter
sorted clothes, helped with mailings and part of a "walk crew" for a local AIDS organization
organized blood drives
helped with can drives
worked at a Dad's Make a Difference Day
coached basketball and tennis for a Girl Scout Sports Festival
scooped ice cream for a PBS fundraiser event

I volunteer at the hospital where I used to work, not the same department. I check out stuff on the computer to see if it matches the print out that they get from Medical Records. I like it very much and also the people I work with. What is real nice about it is that if I can not come in, because of vacation or weather etc., all I have to do is call. I do not have to get someone to fill in for me.

That's my middle name!!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D

I am a girl scout leader and volunteer on other levels for the council and service unit (service unit manager, fall product sale chair, volunteer task force member (for hopefully only one more week), council delegate, fall product sale committee - my blood is green, what can I say :D ).

I am the coordinator for the holiday food baskets at our church this year after getting off the committee that was head of this for 6 years.

I am the Market Day Chair for our school.

I also volunteer at the school for other things as needed and as I have time. I am seriously beginning to look at my volunteer duties and probably handing over food baskets next year and I am seriously considering not being a leader next year (we have low amount of girls and they are older and just not interested and I want to get more active on the council level). So we'll see. I have one more year of Market Day as my daughter will be out of that school in a year.

I volunteer at a wild animal rehabilitation center and museum. My training to be a rehabilitator starts in Febuary I can't wait! :)

I'd really like to fly to Spain right now to help clean all the bird and animals coming in from the oil spill... it makes me crazy I can't do something to help!

Yes! :) Primarily at my son's school. I am "room mom" for his class, I "teach" computer on Wednesdays, I take care of the school library... also, along with 3 other mothers, I help to put the school yearbook together every year, then you've got the field trips, hot lunch, blah blah blah... I'm also on their sub list so get the occasional 6:00 AM call to sub for a sick teacher or the school receptionist. :)

I volunteer at church and DS's school. I help out in art class, computer/reading class, serve beverages at Pizza Night for the church. Also volunteer for those things that pop up during the school year. It's a great way to meet some great people!

I volunteer for Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS. I'd like to do more for New York Cares.

I volunteer at my 2 oldest ds school thru the PTA and Touchdown club. Last yr I was VP of my 12 yr oldest football team (city league-not school). When I just had 1 ds and more time on my hands I volunteered at the human ranch here in Houston. They did rehab on abused horses. Im waiting now til my 2 little ones get a bit bigger and hope to volunteer maybe at an animal shelter.

I volunteer through my school and have been doing so for 4 years now.
Once a week during my 4th period I go and volunteer at a fourth grade class at the middle school. I have been with the same teacher for all 4 years :)

I spend 70 hours/week in human services, so the "well" is pretty dry when I finally get home:D :D . I do help with fund-raising, but my DW is the one who actually has hours to give to various non-profits in our area.........
