I volunteer with Mote Aquarium in the dolphin and whale hospital. Occasionally when there is an animal in rehab at the Marine Mammal Conservacy that is in Key Largo, I will drive the 5-6 hours to volunteer there. I also volunteer at the Sarasota Jungle Gardens working with macaws and cockatoos. I will also be a volunteer coordinator in the fall with Big Cat Habitat. I used to volunteer at a show horse barn. In the past I have volunteered at another aquarium, horse places, and Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network. I only volunteer and give money to animal charities as that is where my heart lays. I figure there are enough other people to give to human charities.
You are a girl after my own heart!! Most of my friends, don't even call me by my name. They just call me dolphin girl . LOL!
In college, I ran the Orange County Marine Mammal Stranding Network and did dolphin research, for my then Professor's Thesis. I've been away from doing that kind of work, for a while but miss it sooo much.
This week I inquired about volunteering here: http://www.ocean-institute.org/ and am waiting to hear back. The day I sent them the e-mail I ran into that aforementioned Professor, at the movies!!! I haven't seen him in 20 years and the day I look into going back to that work, I see him!! I think it's a sign!!
I am also thinking of doing work here: http://www.pacificmmc.org/ . We worked with them a lot when handling strandings.
Aside from this, I'm a Recruitment Adviser for my sorority and have been volunteering for them for about 20 years. I've done some work for the Arthritis Foundation and organized a few large events to raise scholarship money for college women.
But, like you (dolphinrescuegirl), my heart is with the animals and educating people about conservation, so that is where I'm looking now.
To the CASA's! Kudos!! We are in the process of getting licensed for Foster Adoption
